Gun control is a one of the important public issue that creates extremely emotional reactions among both those who support greater regulation of firearms and those who oppose further restrictions on ownership and call for the abolition of many existing limitations. The problem upraised in the argument deal with major queries of legal law and the civil rights of individuals, prospects for self-defence, the control of violence, and domestic security. Both sides of the gun control debate have their heroes and villains. They argue that, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” However, statistics shows that firearms have had an independent impact on violence in the number of violent crimes that lead to serious injury and death. According to Webster (2006), over a period of 1992 to 2004, gun related deaths have decreased from 21.4% to 8% by removal of guns from domestic environment in Australia. Thus, figures clearly clarifies the danger of having more guns in society. Moreover, gun control supporters argue that implementing gun control will allow every weapon to be traceable and thus fear of being traced will promote less use of guns. One potential concern, however, is that thousands of guns of law abiding citizens are stolen annually. Additionally, many criminals purchase their firearms from the black market, where it is easily available and can’t be traced too. Weatherburn (2006) states that if one intends to commit crime will
get gun anyhow from anywhere legally or illegally. However, if by several gun control laws, there are limitation in owning licensed guns then that decrease in gun ownership among law-abiding citizens will decrease the availability of firearms for criminals possessed through robberies. Moreover, federal securities can get more hold of criminals by concentrating on a group of black-marketers instead of monitoring every citizen.
In conclusion, in modern times there are numerous other ways to assure our protection. Therefore, we should leave the firearms in the custody of those in authority. By doing this, the privilege of gun possession is not widely abused and guns do not end up in the hands of criminals or infants.
