Vocabulary

Pollutants
An undesirable contaminant that adversely affects the chemical, physical, or biological characteristic of the environment
Primary air pollutants
A contaminant that directly enters the atmosphere; it is not initially formed by reactions of airborne substances
Secondary air pollutants

A contaminant generated in the atmosphere by chemical reactions between primary air pollutant and natural components of air
Particulate pollutants

Microscopic particle that enters the air from either human activities or natural process

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Reactive carbon-containing substances that readily evaporates into air, such as components of gasoline and organic solvents

(temperature inversion)
In LA, the combination of sunny weather and mountains can produce temperature inversion about 320 days annually. During a temperature inversion, air pollutants cannot escape, so their concentration may rise to dangerous levels. The production and severity of photochemical smog, which can occur even without a temperature inversion, are amplified by that accumulation of pollutants. The reason of this is because the mountain gets the cool air beneath a less dense warm air mass.

Know how photochemical smog is produced
Hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide from vehicle exhausts are irradiated by sunlight in the presence of oxygen gas. The resulting reactions produce a potentially dangerous mixture, including other nitrogen oxides, ozone, and irritating organic compounds, as well as carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Hydrocarbons + sunlight + O2 + CO + NOx →O3 + NOx + organics + CO2 + H2O
Explain why photochemical smog formation varies throughout the day
Early morning traffic increases the emissions of both nitrogen oxides and VOCs as people drive to work.
Later in the morning, traffic dies down and the nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds begin to be react forming nitrogen dioxide, increasing its

(chemical reactions of CO2, SOx, and NOx with water)

Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain
Precipitation with a pH less than 5.6

Write the reactions of CO2, SO2, and NO2 with water

CO2 in water: CO2 + H2O  H2CO3
SOX in water: SO2 + H2O  H2SO3
NOX in water: 2 NO2 + H2O  HNO3 (nitric acid) + HNO2 (nitrous acid)
Explain how carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides enter the atmosphere
Carbon dioxie  living beings, industries, automobiles, burning of fossil fuels
Sulfur oxides  burning coal (power plants +

When a city expands, more houses and buildings are built to meet the demands of new residents and business that are moving into a location. In order to construct new building, heavy vehicles are needed to clear land and begin construction. These heavy vehicles emit CO2 into the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas which is part of the greenhouse effect that causes Global Warming. The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet 's lower atmosphere and surface ("Global Warming", 2013). In addition, new buildings cause indoor pollutants that are released through air vents, open doors, and open windows. These pollutants include formaldehyde (H2CO) from carpet and plywood, as well as, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paint and…

There are several factors contributing to the photochemical smog over Cincinnati. Car exhaust, industry, coal-burning, gas-powered lawn equipment, paints and boats on the Ohio River are some of the major contributors with car exhaust contributing 44% alone. Oak trees in the surrounding hills emit high levels of VOCs which are ingredients in the development of the smog. Photochemical smog has many harmful effects to human health and the health of other living organisms but it also increases the rate of destruction of buildings, metals and rubbers.…

A corrosive gas from burning coal often associated with industrial smog. (d) SO2 3. A dangerous indoor air pollutant. (A) CO 4. Emitted from diesel and burning fuel. (E) PM10 5. All of the following are examples of primary air pollutants except. (c) tropospheric ozone 6. The greatest emission of sulfur dioxide comes from (C) Industrial processes 7. The least amount of nitrogen oxide emissions comes from (A) on road vehicles 8. The accumulation of tropospheric ozone at night depends mainly upon the atmospheric concentrations of (B) volatile organics 1. What are they? The six criteria air pollutants are sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon oxides, lead, particulate matter and tropospheric ozone. These six pollutants significantly threaten human health, ecosystems and/or structures. 2. How is each produced? Sulfur dioxide is mostly produced from the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil. It can also be released during volcanic eruptions. Nitrogen oxides are produced from vehicles as well as stationary fossil fuel combustion. Some is also released through lightning and forest fires.Carbon monoxide is formed by incomplete combustion of most matter. Vehicle exhaust and many other combustion process produce Carbon monoxide. It is also a indoor pollutant when exhaust systems on natural gas heaters misfunction. Carbon dioxide is produced from complete combustion of most matter such as biomass and fossil fuels. Particulate matter is released when fossil fuels and bio fuel is burned. Also it is released with activities that involve movement of dust or sand. Lead is released from old paint, gasoline additive and combustion of fossil fuels. Tropospheric ozone is a secondary pollutant and is made by water, sunlight, oxygen, nitrogen oxides and VOCs.…

The Earth is entirely surrounded by a blanket of air which is called the earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere allows human, plants, and all the earth’s creatures big and small to exist. The atmosphere protects the earth and without it the heat from the sun would burn all that is exposed to its rays, and we could be frozen by the low temps at night. Gas, particulate matter, odors that have been introduced into the air by mankind or nature can destroy the natural balance, this is pollution. There are Primary pollutants and Secondary pollutants, which we will be covering in this presentation, when pollutants are introduced to/in the air, it travels very easily and spread as well, since we breathe in air, we cannot avoid these toxins or pollutants.…

Smog can form in almost any climate where industries or cities release large amounts of air pollution, such as smoke or gases. However, it is worse during periods of warmer, sunnier weather when the upper air is warm enough to inhibit vertical circulation. It is especially prevalent in geologic basins encircled by hills or mountains. It often stays for an extended period of time over densely populated cities or urban areas, such as London, Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New Delhi, New York, Cairo, Los Angeles, Sacramento, São Paulo, Mexico City, Santiago of Chile, Toronto, Athens, Beijing, Shanghai, Manila, Hong Kong, Seoul, the Randstad or Ruhr Area and can build up to dangerous levels.…
