Why Author Use Fake Names
For over a century, authors have been using fake names on their books, stories, poems, and other pieces of literature. But why is that? Why don’t authors want to use their own name for such great works of art? They’re many reasons why authors choose to use fake names. Some authors want to hide who they really are to avoid bringing shame to them and their family. Other popular authors want to hide themselves because they have gotten too popular. Sometimes, especially in the past, women use pen names to avoid prejudice against them. In the past, women were not usually educated. So it comes as no surprise that not many of them wrote books. It was not seen as acceptable for women to write books in the past. This is proved by “Letter from Robert Southey to Charlotte Brontë” that was written by Robert Southey as a response to Charlotte Brontë asking him his opinion on her poetry. In his response, Southey criticized Brontë for writing, and said that literature cannot be in a woman's life, and it shouldn't be in a woman's life. According to “Introducing Jane Eyre: An Unlikely Victorian Heroine” by National Endowment for the Humanities, victorian women were very limited in what they could do. They were strongly discouraged from writing, as it was seen as improper. This is why Charlotte Brontë chose to use the pen name Currer …show more content…
According to Bennet, Eric Blair used the name George Orwell when writing his classic books, like Animal Farm, to avoid bringing shame to his family. C.S. Lewis, an Oxford professor, used the name Clive Hamilton to publish his poems because he didn’t want to jeopardise his job. As stated previously, women in the past were thought of as shameful when they wrote books. Robert Southey believed that women should not have a place in writing literature. Because of this, women of the past used pen names to avoid being

Bronte demonstrates her stance on feminism by creating characters that defy the stereotypical ideal woman during the Victorian era. Jane’s characterization opposed many desired virtues of the Victorian era because the ideal woman at the time was docile and selflessly devoted to her family as demonstrated in Patmore’s poem which reads, “ Man must be pleased, but him to please/ Is woman’s pleasure.” (Document E) As opposed to the character of Jane Eyre portrayed as a strong, stubborn woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and has control of her own choices. Since she has no familial male figures present in her life, Jane has the opportunity to make autonomous decisions on what she wants, contradicting the standard rule of male ownership of…

One of the most important early American writers of the colonial era was Anne Bradstreet (1612–1672). Although some women “turned to fiction writing as a way of voicing and advancing themselves through the mediation of the book” (622), many were reluctant or incapable to do so. After the Revolution the situation of women writers changed; “the transitional period between 1780 and 1830, a time during which women shifted from writing primarily for private audiences to writing for a broader public” (Zagarri 19). After the revolution the number of books, newspapers, and magazines increased. That led to the emergence of new audiences, including women. The first magazine to put “lady” in the title was The Gentleman and Lady’s Town and Country Magazine, published in 1784 (25). New publications needed more materials. That led to the entrance of new writers, especially women. “Women’s perceptions of themselves changed, too: rather than consumers of literature, they began to conceive of themselves as producers, as active agents who had something important to say to a public audience” (19). The Revolution increased the public presence and political role of…

Writing has been and always will be a crucial part in any culture around the globe. Humans have used writing for many things such as documenting history, communicating, developing letters of the law, and last but certainly now least, creating works of fiction and imagination. However, historically, writing has always had a more masculine connotation, but now in today’s time, women have shattered through this stereotype and made their presence known in the literary field. One of these women include Zora Neale Hurston. She made her appearance during the Harlem Renaissance—a predominantly African American cultural movement of the 1920s and 1930s. During her lifetime, Hurston enjoyed a measure of fame, followed by a long eclipse. Her works reflect…

English-3 9 March, 2017 Jane Eyre: Challenging Social Norms Jane Eyre is a platform Charlotte Bronte used to show what she thought about society through the eyes of a governess, which she herself was when she wrote the book. She highlights many things in society that are considered normal, but she shows her opinion about what the right thing to do is. Some of the things she points out individually are wealth, classes, and gender inequality. During the Victorian era, wealth was often given to the oldest living son when the parents died. It would not be split evenly between all children of the parents, leaving the oldest consequently very wealthy and in a great position while also leaving the rest of the…

Charlotte Bronte goes against traditional Victorian values and communicates women as being as independent, strong-willed and knowledgeable as the men of society. “…That then I longed for a power of vision which might overpass that limit”. Referring to women, Jane makes a point that “it is vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action”. Bronte, through Jane, identifies directly from these statements that she wants to and has the ability to be completely independent and that she has her own visions and abilities. In the Victorian period women were…

Unfortunately many of these writings remain unclear as to whom the writer might be. Women were still discovering their voice, and many already had husbands and families. It would have been dangerous for them to take credit for their writings. One author was brave enough to take a stand against the thinking of Joseph Swetnam, and she was not afraid to use her real name. Rachel Speght was the daughter of a rector and the wife of a minister in the early 1600s.…

“The reader should realize himself that it could not have happened otherwise, and that to give him any other name was quite out of the question.” - Nikolai Gogol. This is the epigraph for the Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake, for the quote foreshadows a lot of what the novel contains and helps us understand the difference between what we're being told and what we're, seeing. Jhumpa Lahiri chooses to start with a quote from Nikolai Gogol for it connects to both The Overcoat and The Namesake for names having more meaning than a label. Jhumpa Lahiri connects with both The Overcoat and The Namesake using names with meaning that have importance in their families.…
