Bethany Hamilton’s life is one of the most remarkable in the world. The amount of faith, love, and hope that Bethany Hamilton has is extraordinary. Bethany survived a vicious shark attack in which she lost most of her arm. If something terrible or horrific happens to someone that believes in Christ or at least knows about Him they sometimes point fingers at Him and believe that He “did this to them”. Bethany was nothing like this.…
This book was based off the true story of Bethany Hamilton. Hamilton was a teenage girl who lived in Hawaii, there she was an avid surfer. On Halloween day Hamilton traveled to the beach to continue to surf, when an awful event took place. There she was bit by a shark and lost her arm up to the shoulder. The book continued with her remarkable recovery and told how she came back and continued to surf. Bethany showed courage before and after her shark attack. Days or even months after her shark attack, Bethany continued surfing. “I was not afraid. “ (p.8). Bethany explained how she felt about surfing again. Most…
When I hear resilience I think of a spring that when released from a stretched position quickly moves back into its original state. When applying the term resilience to people I think of someone being mentally strong so that when hard times a rise one does not shy away and remain in a saddened state. Instead, someone who is resilient bounces back from hard times quickly. They are able to put aside their sudden emotions transcending pain or illness until a later time. This allows them to focus on the task at hand. Having resilience also allows people to adapt to different situations because it is impossible to remove the positivity resilient people carry around with them. Resilient people see pain or bad times as only temporary states in the larger scheme of life. In addition, not only are resilient people…
A couple tugs was all it took and before she knew it her arm was gone and from what it looked like so was her career as a professional surfer. As a thirteen year old, most of us aren't worried about what the surf is like, what types of bathing suits we are wearing, or the type of surfboards we have but Bethany was the complete opposite. Her world revolved around surfing; it was a part of her life, and so quickly it could have been taken from her. She had only been in the water for 30 minutes and within those 30 minutes, Bethany was attacked by a shark, taking her arm with it. Despite the loss of her arm, she didn't let that stop her from following her dreams and doing what she loves, surfing. The life of Bethany Hamilton has changed the sport…
Just one month after the attack, Bethany returned back to the water and continued to pursue her dream to be a professional surfer. Of course, without one arm, everything that once seemed simple became so difficult for Bethany. She has relearnt every skills and positions she had learnt about surfing before. Yet none of this has once discouraged Bethany to give up on her dream. In January, 2004, she made her return to surf competition with one arm. She placed the 5th in the Open Women’s division of the National Scholastic Surfing Association National (NSSA) Competition. Bethany continued to enter and excelled in…
“Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of faith, determination, and hope.” According to her own website she was born into a family of surfers on February 8, 1990, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where she began surfing at a young age. She entered her first competition at the age of eight, where she won both short and long board divisions. “This sparked a love for surf competition within her spirit.” Bethany tells her own life story in her website… she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai’s North shore when she was only thirteen years old, on October 31, 2003. According to Bethany, she lost over 60% of her blood and the attack left her with a severed left arm. She went through several surgeries and she was then “on her way to recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude.” “Lifeguards and doctors believe her strong water sense and faith in God helped get her through the traumatic ordeal.” Bethany went on to continue pursuing her goal to become a professional surfer, just one month after the attack. This was a miracle! She continued to enter and excel in many competitions. “Since losing her arm, Bethany’s story has been told in hundreds of media outlets and she has been recognized with numerous awards, public appearances, and various speaking engagements.”…
Bethany Hamilton was a teenager who lived in Hawaii. Her dream was to become a pro surfer. She lived with her family and was training to win Hawaii regional. Bethany and her friends one day decided to go out surfing in “the tunnel” which caused her life to change. Bethany got attacked by a shark and lost her arm as well as 60% of her blood. This delayed her time in practicing and discouraged her from surfing. Thinking that she wouldn’t be able to make it, Bethany went on a missions trip with her youth group to Thailand. She was able to learn from going that just because she lost one arm, the world isn’t going to end. She managed to still use her arm and surf. She just had to learn how to adjust to her new life.…
Resilience is the ability to recover readily from illness, depression, adversity, and similar occurrences. The question though, is whether or not you must learn resilience and hardiness, or if you are born with the personality traits that allow you to jump back from illness and other similar issues so quickly.…
Bethany Hamilton is one tough puppy. Bethany had the “typical life”, all normal until one day she had a not so “typical life.” After a terrible event happened, getting her arm torn off by a shark. While she was in the hospital she was thinking “Will I ever be able to surf again?” Some people said “no” but she said “yes!”…

"While there is no universally accepted definition of resilience, it is often broadly conceptualized as resistance to psychopathology, but not a total invulnerability to psychiatric disorder. It is usually discussed on a continuum with vulnerability," said Catherine Mancini, MD, at the 159th Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. Resilience, generally defined as the personal qualities that enable one to thrive in the face of adversity, has been shown to be modifiable and to improve with…
The word resilience is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as: “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change”. This in the psychological world still has the same meaning as Bjorklund states: “resilience is the maintenance of healthy functioning following exposure to trauma”. In dealing with life and adult development we are either going to become more resilient or breakdown. It is my belief that the more a person goes through and is tested in life it will determine whether they will breakdown or become a more resilient person. My research has determined that faith and spirituality will help a person become resilient in life.…
What is Resilience? Conner &Davidson (2003) state flexibility as individual effectiveness and capacity in creating the bio-psychic adjust at the hazardous conditions. Resilience is the way toward adjusting admirably despite difficulty, injury, disaster, dangers, or even noteworthy wellsprings of stress —, for example, family and relationship issues, genuine medical issues, or working environment and money related stressors. It signifies "bobbing back" from troublesome encounters.…
Humans as a species has suffered many sorts of hardships. Countless wars, billions of deaths, diseases, famine, crime, but humans have never given up. In my words, to be resilient means that no matter how hard or unfair life hits you, you get back up and continue living. There is absolutely no point in lying down and giving up. You have to face life for what it is, a cruel, unmoving force that bows down to no man and does not care about you at all. Which in a way, makes life living for. If you think about it, think about how pointless life would be if everything is perfect. No hate, no death, nothing…
