Why Breakfast is Important (speech)
Mandy Key Speech date: March 11, 2014
Why breakfast is important:
Introduction (attention): Have you ever heard of the supposed wise tale that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day?” Well, whoever said it was right. Breakfast is exactly what it says it is, it’s a break to the fast you’ve had over night. Without breakfast your body is still asleep, your groggy, irritable, or you just can’t focus on anything. I’m sure we all know how it feels to not eat breakfast lately, with early classes or work: but what about how you feel when you actually do get some food in you before making the long haul to class? I want you to do me, and yourself a favor and do what we all love to do: eat.
Need: Many mothers try to force food down you before you head off to school growing up so once you leave home you develop the breakfast of a champ: coffee and a cigarette. And ever since then breakfast has been maybe some pop tarts... at lunchtime.
What many people don’t know is that breakfast can make or break a diet, because breakfast helps set the tone for the rest of the day. If you’re one of those people who think skipping breakfast is a good way to lose weight... think again. Five reasons you should never skip breakfast include:

1. Your body responds to not eating for hours and hours while you sleep by slowing down its metabolic rate. By eating breakfast, you wake up your metabolism to burning those calories you need to burn to lose weight.

2. Eating breakfast aids in weight loss. In one recent study, people who ate breakfast as their largest meal lost an average of 17.8 pounds over three months. The other participants consumed the same number of total calories per day, but ate most of their calories at dinner, according to the study published in July in the journal Obesity. The large-dinner group only lost an average of 7.3 pounds each over the same time period.

Not only does breakfast help with weight loss, it can help you in class and at work.

Firstly, I support the breakfast program because kids will have better health. For example, by eating breakfast kids have energy. For me, when I wake up in the morning I feel like going back to sleep. After hurrying to school and skipping breakfast I become distracted in class and my stomach begins to ache. However, with the breakfast program kids will come to school unstressed about missing breakfast and will be wide awake, full of energy and ready to learn. Adding the breakfast program will guarantee that kids maintain energy and succeed in school. Another example of why I support the breakfast program is because without breakfast you will develop a belly and/or become overweight. Without starting your metabolism early in the day, when lunch comes an issue occurs. Without breakfast you’re metabolism starts late in the day which will overall result in a very slow metabolism. However, with the breakfast program this obesity will not be an issue in this school district. The breakfast program will definitely help prevent kid and teen obesity.…

overweight. From the article “Eating Breakfast May Beat Teen Obesity” by: Jennifer Warner it says that "teens that eat breakfast regularly eat a healthier diet and are more physically active in throughout their adolescence.” This also says that “Years later, they also gained less weight and had a lower body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight in relation to height used to measure obesity”. Teens think without breakfast they are losing calories but what they do not understand is without breakfast teenagers won’t have the energy to stay active throughout the morning or that later in the day they might eat enough to regret not eating in the morning (Jennifer Warner). The Article goes on to talk about statistics that show a relation between…

    Commentary on Antigone

As Antigone prepares to be taken to her “rockbound prison,” she surrenders her resolute façade and reveals her vulnerable, humbled side as she feels estranged and doomed as an outcast forever from her loved ones and society as whole (939). Antigone begins calling out to her city saying “O you mock me!” personifying Thebes, giving the city power over herself; power to judge her transgressions (930). Antigone uses many apostrophes as she calls out to Thebes for forgiveness, in a tone of phony admiration. Throughout the entire passage Antigone repeats the interjection “O” as she cries out for someone to save her from her doomed fate. As she continues she makes many references to “fathers,” “gods,” and “sons” suggesting Antigone accepted her role as a subservient woman in Athenian society; a role her hubris prevented before (931-935). When Antigone exclaims “holy grove of Thebes, where chariots gather…” she is again accepting her role in society because in Ancient Greece chariot races were the only Olympic sport women were allowed to watch (936).…
