Why Did Alcatraz Escape
I strongly believe that Morris, Allen West, and Clarence and John Anglin did escape and survive Alcatraz also known as "The Rock". I can see what circumstances lead them to attempt an escape from The Rock. The story shows the environment they were in. Alcatraz was on a 22 acre island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Many inmates had attempted an escape but none were successful. Due to the freezing temperatures of the ocean they had died of hypothermia, They had grown, or eaten by the sharks in the shark infested water. according to the article "The small sandstone island of Alcatraz had been used off and on for more than 100 years." Originally named "Isla de los Alcatraces" translated to "Island of the pelicans". During the gold rush in California in 1848 people were concerned that San Francisco might be attacked. The island located only a mile from shore Barren Alcatraz seemed like the perfect spot to build a fortress. Now up to the Civil War in the 1860s …show more content…
, but by the end of the year Alcatraz was housing more than 200 of America's worst …show more content…
The article stated "A car was stolen that night which could have been used by the escapees." based on this evidence they had a way to escape east from where they landed. Also, two unknown unidentified women were spotted at John and Clarence's mothers funeral. According to the video " Two unknown unidentified women with heavy make-up on were seen at John and Clarence's mother's funeral." This evidence leads me to believe that it could have been them in disguise. Another reason I believe this is an unclaimed raft was spotted nearby. the article stated "A raft was discovered on the nearby angel island." this makes me believe they made it to Angel island on the makeshift

When he was found more charges were added. He was serving 99 years in Alcatraz. This team on convects overpowered the guards and locked them into 2 cells, 404 and 403. Their perfect escape could have worked out but, the key to the recreation yard was missing. A guard by the name Miller had a chance to hide the key in the toilet where he was held hostage. “When the breakout was discovered the distress sirens of Alcatraz wailed, indicating grave trouble at the prison, and the sound could easily be heard from the shores of San Francisco. The 1960s and early 1970s were the times of the Vietnam War, the African American Civil Rights Movement, the Latino movement, Feminism, and all sorts social unrest and turmoil (Johnson and Nagel 14). Inspired by this wave of activism, American Indians decided to take action and start their own fight for equality and basic civl rights (14). One of the most significant events during this Native American "civil rights movement," doubtlessly, was the occupation of an abandoned state penitentiary, commonly known as Alcatraz Island, on November 20, 1969 (Lapin and Hanna). Young college students from all over California, mainly however from the University of California campuses, took the island raising media attention from all over the world and gaining the support of the San Francisco Bay Area's public (Johnson and Nagel 14). After 19 months, the Alcatraz takeover ended bringing only little change for the American Indians, yet, the proclamation issued during this occupation laid the foundation for future protest, because it…

I know when a person commit a crime they are punished for the crime. This was very cruel of how these inmates were treated. The uniforms did not fit the inmates well. The meals were not pleasant and baths were giving once a week. These inmates had to pay for their toilet items and the state clothing and these items were brought from the commissary. They weren’t making enough money and would often hustle. When the riot happened the inmates were able to move about the facility because of the gate not working.
