Newfoundland had concluded to not unite with the other four colonies since Prince Edwards Island also had not joined confederation with Canada East, Canada West, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Newfoundland had figured that if they joined the new government that their goods wouldn’t sell, as Canada already had low prices on their products. Which would mean that Newfoundland economy would decrease because their items will not be purchased? The colony also realized that taxes would increase on their own goods: boats, fish and fishing tackle. In addition, the new ministry was none approachable for the Newfoundlanders because the mainland was too far away from Newfoundland.…
Focussed Topic: Prior to the first half of the twentieth century, Canada was nothing more than a British colony, but that changed as the nation went through a building block of events towards full autonomy.…
After the American Revolution had ended in 1783, the states were left in a vulnerable position. Although the states had won the war and gained their independence, there was still a huge war deficit, fear of invasion from England or other countries like France or Spain, a virtually non-existent army of 600 men, no strong trade route to bring in money, Indian hostilities and a very weak economy. The majority of Americans did not want a national government, they were afraid to establish one after fighting a long war to gain independence from England. Initially the Articles of Confederation had served as a united agreement between the states but gave each independent state the right to govern…
Some ways Canada earned respect from the international community and gained Independence as a nation :…
Did you know that the Constitutional Convention came together to reform the Articles of Confederation, but they ended up a whole new plan of government? One of the biggest issues was how representation was going to be set up in the Legislative Branch, so two plans were made, one of which is the Virginia Plan. Under the Virginia Plan, the Legislative Branch would be bicameral, or have two houses. Representation would be based on population in both houses, giving Congress and larger states more power. The other plan was called the New Jersey Plan, which is the plan smaller states favored.…
At our class confederation conference, my colony chose to join confederation for a variety of reasons. First, it enabled the construction of an intercolonial railway that provided Canada West access to the Atlantic ports. Without this railway, the imports and exports of Canada West would be carried through American railways and ports. And they would have no way of traveling to the Maritime colonies.…
On July 1st, 1867 the British North America Act or the Constitution Act of 1867 had gone into effect creating the " One Dominion under the name of Canada". However, there were many wars, debates, conferences, and so on till confederation had finally taken place, and though there may have been many internal and external factors contributing to the creation of Canada. War and expansionism was the absolute main reason for why confederation took place. If it wasn't for the American Civil War, Or the Fraser River Gold Rush in British Columbia and the American's belief in Manifest Destiney. BNA would've never been alarmed by America's presence.…
Firstly, building Canada as a strong and prosperous nation was based largely on competition. For instance, the main reason the French and English colonized Canada was for its resources and, more specifically, the Fur Trade. This lead to the creation of trading companies, including the Hudson Bay Company, which was British based. But the French had their own company and the two struggled for control of the Fur Trade in Rupert’s land until 1763 with the Treaty of Paris.…
After signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the thirteen former American colonies had an identity crisis. It was one thing to declare independence and it was another to figure out exactly what you were once you declared it. At the time, the governing body was the continental congress. In 1777, this congress took an important first step to untie the former colonies by drafting the Articles of Confederation. They decided there needed to be some organization at the center of the colonies, but it couldn't be too strong; therefore, they created a confederation of states, in which individuals from the different states would be diplomats.…
By now, most of you have heard that the idea of Confederation is going around the government suggested by both John A.Macdonald and George Brown. I believe that we ought to hear them out in order to save our country from falling into the hands of the Americans. The confederation is the most plausible choice at this very moment in time because there is a very high chance that the Americans will take over Canada because we support the Southern states during the Civil war. The Civil war between the Northern and Southern states was a war focused on whether or not to abolish slavery. The Southern states were against slavery, while the Northern states were for slavery. During the Civil war, Canada has supported the Southern states on not abolishing…
The government from both Canada East and Canada West couldn’t pass any of the laws, because they needed “double majority”. The problem that the French and the English had, were that they were not agreeing on everything. So nothing got achieved. As the Politician of Canada East said: “ We have five colonies and in order to become a great nation they need only to be brought together under one central Government. The matter comes down to this, either we form a British American Confederation or we will be absorbed into the United States of America.” (Doc…
In the end, the path to Confederation was led by pressure from a numerous amount of sources, leading the way to the creation of Canada.…
The second threat was the US. In the US there was a group named manifest destiny who felt it was their destiny to take over all of North america. BNA felt that if they were to properly fend for themselves, they would have to join together. The third reason for confederation was the need for a railroad. In the winter, trade within the colonies became difficult since the st. lawrence river froze, making it almost impossible to trade in the winter season since boats were their main type of…
The colonies that the British started in America, was for their own gain, it was to help create a supply of resources for them to receive as a return for helping them start anew. This was how it started, but what Britain did not realize was this was going to be the start of a new culture being brought forward to join forces as one. The British attempted to hold strict laws against the colonies so they continued gaining the most benefits. These British colonies in America were able to create a personal identity for themselves by their use of economy, religion, and their political structure, by ways of their set up, their way of life in colonies helped them create a joint unity. There were many aspects that played into the role of creating this…
Lastly, before confederation; there were high tariffs in place between the colonies--- if they were to confederate, these taxes would no longer exist. This would indefinitely boost trade and business; also businesses from parts like PEI would have access to the ice free ports of Halifax. Now even though I, a student from modern times, think that confederation is great; people from those times did have reasonable uncertainties about confederation. One of many was that because of confederation; Britain would no longer be responsible for defending Canada with its navy and thus Canada would be exposed to American Invasion. It was a viable threat; but with confederation Canada would definitely be better able to defend itself [see advantage 1].…
