It was strategically important because it was a route for the transport of iron ore from Sweden to Germany. Norway remained neutral until it was invaded by Germany on 9 April 1940, as part of Operation Weserübung which was the code name for Germany's assault on Denmark and Norway. The Norwegian government fled the capital and after two months of fighting went to Britain and continued the fight in exile.
