"I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me." This quote is from Charles Dickens’ wonderful work of literature, The Tale of Two Cities. This quote reflects how Dickens might have felt through the first part of his life. Throughout the hardships of Dickens’ life, he persevered by means of writing. He was able to write a novel about his great and noble passions in life. The betrayal of the unjust rich and the perfect view of the lives of the oppressed poor.
With Dickens being poor in his early life, it allowed him to have a perspective that not many other writers had at that day. He was one of the most read writers at the time, and it provided him with influence. This caused many people to gravitate to his opinion. When he was only 12 years old he was tossed in debtor’s prison because his father couldn’t support the family. (Discovery.com). This inspired Dickens to write A Tale of Two Cities. When Monseignor makes his way to his villa in the countryside he passes by a woman who says her husband is dead. Monseignor acts snobby and asks if he could restore him to her. Then the widow states that all she wants is an article to put by her husbands grave, so she can remember where he lies. “‘Monseigneur, the good God knows; but I don’t ask it. My petition is, that a morsel of stone or wood, with my husband’s name, may be placed over him to show where he lies.’” After this, the pompous fool rides away.
