The Spanish Empire was the most powerful empire before its colonization of the West Indies began in the late 15th century. Spain had the infamous Spanish Armada, which was the most dominant in sea battle. Also the Spanish were very wealthy because they have acquired lots of riches from their explorations. In the 17th through 18th century, problems broke out in Dutch territories causing Spain to be forced to leave the West Indian Islands and Jamaica open for conquest. England eventually took control and proceeded to take interest in the crops.
