Why Did Henry Viii Closed Dow the Monasteris
In the 1500’s the king of England was Henry VIII. He had already broken up with the Catholic Church and the Pop. He had made himself head of the Church of England. Also he had divorced with Catherine of Aragon and marred Anna Boleyn. His lifestyle was extravagant and he was also worried that he could be attacked by the Catholic countries of Europe.
Under these circumstances he decided to close down the monasteries for the following reasons: * He was greedy and needed more money for his extravagant lifestyle. * He needed lots of money to be prepared in case of a war with enemies * He needed to make sure the nobles of England supported him. * The monasteries had a lot of treasures and valuable parts and land * Monks and nuns lived a sinful life. Hennery VIII did not want to be unpopular to his people, for closing the monasteries, so he needed to justify his actions. For this reason he ordered his minister Thomas Cromwell to send inspectors to report how holy was the life of monks / nuns and how wealthy the monasteries were.
The reports said that the monks and nuns were living a sinful life.
Using the reports he managed to justify closing down the monasteries. He seized the wealth and the land of the monasteries for his needs (extravagant lifestyle, in case of war). To keep the nobles loyal to him, he gave them money and land. Finally this helped him to break one more link of the Pope with his people.

    This rebirth came after being embarrassed and humiliated by his marriages to Cleves and Howard. It is also important to recognise as Richardson does, that the reason the peace after 1545 is so uneasy is because of Henry’s achievements in war. No longer was there a balance in honour, therefore Francis was stuck in a peace he wanted to resolve - hence the continued sour relations that weren’t seen after the Field of the Cloth of Gold, which was otherwise similar in circumstances. The reason Henry VIII acted in such a reserved, and what has been interpreted as fearful way in 1539, was because of extent of the threat - the potential for a Catholic Crusade from a Habsburg-Valois alliance had a significant potential, in the wake of the Papal Bull of Excommunication against Henry VIII. Had the Treaty of Toledo been followed through it would have presented an existential crisis to the throne. However other explanations for his alliance seeking have been uncovered by McEntegart. He argues that, whilst security still remained a top priority, the king also had theological reasons for discussing with the Schmalkaldic League, exemplified by his considerations, at least on aspects of the Augsburg confession, in order to assist in creating uniformity in the Church. Furthermore he reveals the great plays of Cromwell’s faction in this period against the conservatives in order to further his heretical cause. This in turn led to Henry more closely seeking relations with the Schmalkalden as well as withdrawing from mainstream European politics.     The church had in many ways a positive role and this is mainly shown through their developments in hospitals.. Hospitals were mainly set up by the church as parts of monasteries and convents; they were the first steps that helped the population’s public health. Hospitals progressed in standards and effectiveness greatly through the period of 1350 to 1750. In the earlier years around the 14th century hospital’s numbers were increasing rapidly and by 1400 there were 500 across England. They would help patients by providing them with healthy food and water and rest, although this did not cure any illnesses it showed that they must have some knowledge of how to stay healthy. They would also make fresh herbs into remedies which they might treat some of the patients with, some of which were occasionally successful. This progressed when after Henry VIII’s closure of the monasteries in the 1530s more hospitals were eventually built over England (11 in London, and 46 across the rest of Britain.) This progress meant hospitals now took in the poor and some started to take in those with infectious diseases.
