There is an argument that Proctor’s decision was not the right choice to make. Someone would rather die knowing they had done no wrong or someone would confess to something they had not done and live the rest of their life with the confession “taped” to their back. The choice seems pretty clear; to continue to live but with something so unnecessary hanging around although that something so minor was not small at all. Confessing to witchcraft is not a small feat to do,but standing up and dying just for the knowledge that the people accused didn’t do anything that was wrong or unethical is an even greater feat to have to choose to overcome. That’s what John decided to do. He decided to step out of what was the obvious choice and go for the route that people may see as the wrong choice by telling them “You will not use me!”(pg.144) He was running away from this knowledge that he had consulted with the devil in a non obvious way by going behind his wife’s back and having a relationship with Abigail. This may have been the case,but with or without that he still choose to die with his choice without having the thought that he had done witchcraft.
