In 1977 Jonestown was founded for members of the people’s temple by Jim Jones in the jungles of Guyana, and had 50 people living there. This all changed when an exposé was being printed about him. The article included article with ex-members. That night Jim jones and hundreds of others flew to Guyana and moved into the Jonestown compound. Jonestown was meant to be a utopia but didn’t have enough housing or beds. The cabins were filled from wall to wall with bunk beds and were majorly over crowded. People would sleep in gender based cabins so married couples would be separated. Many people would get sick due to the temperature and members would have to work up to 12 hours a day in the heat. He took along his advisor, a NBC film crew and the concerned relative of people in Jonestown. When he got there a note was secretly passed to a member of NBC with the names of people who wanted to leave. On November, 18, 1978, Ryan announced he was going to take anyone who wanted to leave back to the US. Only a few people accepted the offer.
When the truck left with the people who wanted to leave, Ryan stayed back to ensure that no one else wanted to leave. Ryan was attacked by a member of the peoples temple attacked him with a knife, the man failed to cut Ryan’s throat. He then knew he was in danger he joined the truck and left.
