A crucial reason to why and how he rose to power was because of the “leadership race” to determine who would be the next leader of Russia. The real struggle was between two leading figures in the Communist Party, Leon Trotsky and Josef Stalin. Trotsky was a brilliant speaker and writer, he organized the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, played a role in the Bolshevik Revolution, and led the Red Army. Although he managed to turn the USSR in the right the direction through industrialization (advancing technology) but Stalin forced it upon them and tyrannize anyone in his way. He continued to establish his place in authority by taking out any potential opposers within his own parties and armies through his purges. Stalin managed to establish a totalitarian regime within the USSR, he has control of the economy, laws, media, agriculture, and has the NKVD to control what everybody is doing.
