On September 17,1862 the Antietam battle was fought. It took place by Sharpsburg, Maryland led by General George B. McClellan for the Union, and General Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy. The Confederate was on defense But Lee thought to go on offense after the second Bull run. In the morning of the battle Joseph Hooker decided to flank the Confederate but, the Confederate did a counterstrike on the Union. The Confederate did not retreat even though they would over run. The Union was trying to retreat to Virginia at night time while they were still fighting with the Confederates. No one really won the battle of Antietam, so the Union thought they won because the Confederates fell back to Maryland. Abraham Lincoln advertised the Emancipation…
Northerners and southerners have been belligerent against each other, this was called the Civil War. The confederates had a leader named Ulysses S. Grant, when the confederates had no hope Grant was determined, he didn’t want to lose the Civil War. Robert E. Lee was also a leader of the Confederates, he had an abundant amount of part in the war. General Lee tried everything so his side of the war could win. General Ambrose Burnside thought if the plans that nobody else have thought of that’s how the Union had won the Civil War, he thought outside of the box.…
Many thought his loss could mean the end of war while Southerners held this hope but in the end Lincoln did get elected the Northerners saw a clear victory. This is because of this election and the past Northern victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg and Sherman’s march. Also Lincoln’s strong leadership along with Grants very strong leadership. The Northerners demanded a permanent end to slavery. The South hated this, so they kept pushing hard and so did we after Lincoln's re-election.…
His second objective came during the war and it was to free the slaves and abolish slavery. Lincoln had a change of heart about slavery during the war. After several defeats in battle, the union won a important victory at Antietam on September 22, 1862. Abraham felt confident and sure enough that the word would keep the union together. Abolishing slavery became his second main goal during the Civil War.…
The reason why Abraham Lincoln won this election was because the electoral college was put in place to give more populated states more representation by giving them more electoral votes to go towards the candidate that the majority of the state voted for. Most of the more populated states were states in the North, and most of the Northern states were against slavery. Therefore, most of the more populated states were against slavery. This caused Abraham Lincoln to win the election because there were more electoral votes from states that wanted to end slavery than there were electoral votes from states that wanted to keep it, and Abraham Lincoln’s primary life goal was to abolish slavery. As a result, this made the South angry because this meant…
During the 1860 Presidential election Abraham Lincoln’s campaign was struggling. Stephen A. Douglas, the Southern Democrat nominee, was picking up steam as he broke the political standards by instituting a traveling campaign. His campaign knew no boundaries as he ventured across the broken nation from New England to the Deep south where he gave speeches, shook hands, and kissed babies. Lincoln’s campaign however was lacking as he was firmly rooted in Springfield. Lincoln knew that he could not afford to lose this election.…
whereabouts. Robert E. Lee was sent to control the rebellion, but Brown’s forces would not surrender. Lee’s army stormed the armory killing ten raiders, two of which were Brown’s sons. Brown was tried and hanged on December 2, 1859 at Charleston, Virginia. Thanks to Brown’s willingness to fight, he made a name for himself among the abolitionists.…
John Floyd, William Wirt, and others. Again, but he lost. Jackson had 219 of the 286 electoral votes, Clay had 49, Wirt had 11, and Floyd had none. Even after this tough loss, he continued to run. He ran in the 1844 election with a hope to win this time.…
The beginning of the Civil War erupted when the question of slavery coming to end came up in the election of 1860. Once the South caught wind of this, they became anxious and had to start thinking about the safety of their markets and what would be the best option if Lincoln were to take office and all of their biggest fears would come true. Once Lincoln won the election, South Carolina took action and was the first state to leave the union and following was Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and Virginia. South Carolina and Mississippi had their own reasons of leaving, but they both had to do with their rights and their main production staff being threatened. South Carolina lead the trend of leaving the Union, beginning…
However, the argument changed to the war being about slavery because of Fredrick Douglass’s speeches and the Confederates surrendering at Vicksburg. Before Abraham Lincoln became president, he had one goal in mind. He wanted…
This time period was all about victories for President Lincoln. Lincoln’s reelection relied heavily on Union victories during the end of the war. Unfortunately, the north hadn’t had the best of luck at the beginning. In order to win reelection the North had to start winning and show signs that the war would soon be over with an overall Union victory.…
During the 1858 Illinois state election, debates between Stephen. A Douglas and Abraham Lincoln began, due to campaign for seats in the state senate. This mostly consisted of the issue of extension of slavery into other territories. The debate that originally came up nearly 40 years before was eventually set to rest in the Missouri Compromise, but I guess it managed to arise again. The mexican war added new territories and the issue arose again in the 1840's.…
Lincoln had a difficult decision to make at the beginning of his presidency, let the nation fall apart or keep it together. He chose to keep it together and "believed that war was necessary to suppress the insurrection and to prevent the Confederacy from achieving its goal of independence." Lincoln and the North went to war against the seceded southern states known as the Confederate, with the sole purpose of reuniting and preserving the Union. He only wanted to stop the growth of slavery and not abolish it completely because to do so would go against the constitution. In order to save the Union, the war must be won and Lincoln was prepared to do whatever it takes to win the war.…
The KKK was a dangerous group of people who thought that the whites were better than everyone else but the most targeted group was blacks. They thought that if they put themselves into a position of power then the blacks wouldn't do anything. And it went that way but later on, in the story, blacks got angry and wouldn't stand for the oppression. They also struck fear into the hearts of blacks by physical and psychological tactics. The KKK was created by a group of confederate soldiers because the blacks helped the north win the war.…
They gave the South false proof about the North that they were teaching their children to hate the South. This got the South angry and scared because this got the South thinking about seceding from the Union. When Lincoln was elected the South thought he was going to try to wipe out slavery, but this was the opposite of what he did at first. Lincoln knew that the South had made their economy on slavery and he did not want to take their wealth away from, but he still did not want slavery to go…
