Why Did Mark Watney Make The Martian
Acting is one of the many aspects that made the Martian such a hit, because of Matt Damon’s “Mark Watney” ability to get into character and sell the position of being stranded on Mars after his team thought he was killed in a storm. It left him later to realize he had survived and was fighting for survival. Like many other movies like this one, the actor went to great lengths to show his despair in survival and trying to maintain a good attitude as well as times of panic through it all. Different concepts from the chapter, which we discussed in class, can be compared to the different aspects that Mark Watney and the casting crew went through to make the Martian a hit it is today.
The first concept to look at is the performance and effect concept.
The movie the Martian did a good job of drawing the attention of the viewers from the beginning because of the popular cast in the film. It had a very successful leading actor and a very strong supporting group of actors and actresses. As well as, showing the money that was put into the film from the very first scene to show that the film had a very big budget and the director wanted it all to look real. Matt Damon did a good job showing that he was alone one Mars and that his essential relationship was through him and his camera whether it was communicating with people on earth or for him to just stay calm while he was by himself on Mars.
The next concept to be compared to this movie is technology and acting. The Martian had lots of computer graphics to show that the movie was based on a person trying to survive on Mars. The actors in this movie had to really tell themselves that they were flying in a space ship, landing on Mars, and having the feeling that there is no gravity in space. The director had to manage the real life look that Matt Damon was actually on Mars, the first human to try to survive on a planet where we are still looking for evidence today that there is life on Mars. As well as him living on Mars the director made his survive, pain, and aggravation look real instead of just being in a studio.
