Why Did Shakespeare Write Hamlet
Why did Shakespeare Write Hamlet?
Shakespeare wrote Hamlet because his only son had died of an unknown illness at the age of just 11. Dating all the way back to the spring/summer of 1596 Shakespeare had received word that his only son Hamnet was ill at the age of 11. Shakespeare being on the road with his company he would only be able to receive news from his family as he was very busy with his tour. In the summer of 1596 Shakespeare had just heard that his only son Hamnet had gotten much sicker and had to return home as fast as he could and stop everything he was doing to be next to his son. On August 11, 1596, Hamnet was buried at Holy Trinity Church passing away from an unknown illness that was never discovered. Around 1600, Shakespeare

There is little documentation on Shakespeare’s life, therefore his birthdate is unknown; however, Shakespeare was baptized April 26th, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare’s father was a public official and could not afford higher education. Researchers assume that he attended King’s New School in Stratford where he learned reading and writing. Although he received some education, the stories that are said to have been written by him contain “elaborate metaphors and rhetorical phrases”, things that are widely considered too complex for a writer with so little education. There are many historians, writers, and researchers that argue whether or not Shakespeare was actually Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s (if infact he did write the widely accredited works) most known stories, plays, sonnets, and poems include: Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Othello. Although it is possible he may have written the stories, the evidence is not in his…

If I were to choose one of the characters from Hamlet it would be the main character, Hamlet. For centuries he continues to amaze and fascinate its readers, perhaps because of the mysteriousness of his character, as well as the relevance of the topics covered in his monologues. His famous monologue beginning with "to be or not to be ...", is probably the most cited page in the history of literature. Hamlet is an enigmatic character, and even the most astute reader may say that he/she hasn’t really understood the character, and the reasons for which it acts .the speeches and actions of Hamlet lend themselves to numerous interpretations.…

From the very beginning, the Play shows that Hamlet is not living the life that everyone would expect a prince to live. His father is dead and his uncle conquered Hamlet’s throne, while declaring Gertrude as his property. Also Hamlet and his love Ophelia are told they cannot be together, which truly initiates the Play. Hamlet doesn’t understand why his life turned out this way. He is often confused and doesn’t know why his life seems to be ‘stuck’ in this horrific cycle of unfortunate events, or if there is more to his life, or a greater purpose. “To be or not to…

It is safe to say that many of Shakespeare’s plays have some sort of madness intertwined in the plot which plays an important role in the story. In the play, Hamlet, the madness as a whole and within the main character himself, Hamlet, plays a vital role. At the start of the play, the main character, Hamlet encounters the ghost of his recently murdered father, King Hamlet. Hamlet learns that the new King Claudius, who is the deceased King’s brother, is the one who murdered King Hamlet. Claudius also married his deceased brother’s wife, who is also Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. The mere plot of the story is an obvious reason to why Hamlet behaved the irrational way that he did.…

Hamlet markedly relates to the era in which it was written. William Shakespeare was born in England in 1564, just eight years after Queen Elizabeth I came into power. Queen Elizabeth’s reign lasted for 45 years, a period in which Shakespeare wrote the vast majority of his plays, including Hamlet, which was written sometime between 1599 and 1602. This was a time of great political instability and turmoil for Queen Elizabeth due to a failed assassination attempt, a failed uprising, and a failed invasion attempt. Shakespeare’s plays were written not only to entertain the lowly masses, but also to appease royal censorship and appease the queen. The protagonist in Hamlet is portrayed as a diplomat and a lover rather than a fighter, possibly to please Elizabeth, who embodied these new modern qualities. Furthermore, Shakespeare may have included the murder…

Violence does not exist for its own sake. In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare used multiple themes of violence. If violence in any part of a play, scene, story, movie, or act occurs for no reason at all then it is more than just a story, and it has more drama in it behind the scenes. Shakespeare used violence in acts four through five in Hamlet, when Ophelia committed suicide. From these two acts, it revealed what Ophelia was going through and feeling.…

A literary hero is someone who displays feats of nobility along with courage. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, young Hamlet is obviously the hero of the play. Stranded in the middle of a court full of corruption, faced with his father’s death and his mother’s almost immediate remarriage, Hamlet somehow comes out of it a hero in the reader’s minds. It is his courageousness and nobility that lead him through his revenge, virtually unscathed by the corruption of the court.…

    Why Is Hamlet Mad

Critics generally agree that Hamlet's madness is but feigning and that he acted according to his program that he confided to Horatio in the very first Act: "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/to put an antic disposition on "(1.1.23) But Edwin Booth hazards a different opinion: "... Hamlet was really the victim of the mental disease he claims to be stimulating; in other words, his presence was pretended, a ruse of madman's cunning."' And Bradley concurs (vide infra). In this paper, an attempt has been made to prove that Hamlet has really become mad and that the nomenclature of the disease, which Bradley avoided, is an existential neurosis. The words mad, madness and lunacy all having the same import—are used in the play thirty to forty times: sometimes indicating real madness, sometimes feigned. However, perhaps, we can arrive at the right conclusion if we follow two courses. One, we can observe Hamlet…

The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by the world renowned, English poet, playwright, and actor, William Shakespeare, between 1599 and 1602. Scholars suggest that Shakespeare’s inspiration came from the legend of Amleth, which follows the storyline of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark very closely. Shakespeare’s tragedy takes place in the Kingdom of Denmark, where we meet a multitude of seemingly ordinary characters, who ultimately meet untimely deaths. The play revolves around the concept of seeking revenge and the repercussions of their actions. Although Hamlet is a dark tragedy, it contains important life lessons. Through the life of Hamlet, Shakespeare shows how revenge is futile, by using the death of his father, his mother’s incestuous marriage, and his…

William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, written between 1599 and 1602, is a tragedy that has become an iconic example of madness, paranoia, romance, blood thirst, and the supernatural. Hamlet sees his father’s ghost and discovers that his father, the former King of Denmark, was poisoned by his brother Claudius. As the plot unfolds, Hamlet appears to be crazed as his paranoia and suspicions overcome him. Claudius sends Hamlet away to England to be murdered when he suspects that Hamlet is on to him. Hamlet then escapes and returns back to Denmark where he fights with his now killed lover’s brother Laertes. As Hamlet is dying due to a wound from Laertes’s sword, he forces Claudius to drink poisoned wine. As in all Shakespeare’s tragedies, every main character is deceased by the end of the play.…
