Why Did The Battle Of Bull Run Fail
Although though the Civil War had started at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. It had really started at the battle of Bull Run. The Battle of Bull Run was fought in Virginia just a few miles from Washington D.C., on July 21, 1861. The commander of the Union was General George McDowell, and for the Confederates General Joseph E. Johnston. The Union had a goal to accomplish, they wanted to open up a path to Richmond, the Confederate capital, and end the war quickly. The Union had 28,450 men while the Confederates had 32,230. On the morning of July 21 both generals had a plan to outflank their opponent’s left. For the Confederates they failed because of lack of communication, while on the other hand the Union failed because of a very complex plan.
