Hitler’s original plan was to capture Moscow in the hopes that with the heart of the soviet union gone the rest of the nation would fall apart and would be Germanys for the taking. So they used Blitzkrieg and blasted through multiple Soviet armies. When his armies were finally stopped by the soviet union's defense, they were already 75 away from the capital. By late October both armies were extremely worn down, and only one-third of the Nazi’s motor vehicles were working and they weren’t able to get proper winter clothing and supplies to be able to survive, let alone fight.
Hitler wouldn’t send tanks to the battlefront because it was too risky to do without a properly fed and clothed infantry to go with them. On the other side of the war front the people of Moscow were starting to lose hope, so Stalin had the army participate in a parade to restore the people’s faith in their army.
