During the 1850's, the vast differences between the North and the South brought about the impending notion of war between the two. The South knew that the North had them beat on every level. The North had manufacturing capabilities with factories that could produce supplies necessary for outfitting an army. Also, the North's population of 22 million was nearly three times the population of the South. The South only had nine million people, four million of whom were black slaves. This larger population provided a steady source of military and civilian manpower, and was important in a war of attrition. Lastly, the North grew most of the country's food, and a fighting army can get very hungry. The South had the plantations, but mostly cash crops were grown there.…
Several factors played in to the American Civil War that made it have the outcome that it did. Although the South had better trained officials due to their military school, the North was far more advanced than they. The North had the advantage over the South in several ways. However, the outcome of the Civil War was not inevitable: it was determined as much by human decisions and human willpower as by physical resources, although the North's resources gave them an edge over the South.…
115. In the united states presidential election of 1864, Abraham Lincoln was reelected as president. Lincoln ran under the National Union banner against his former civil war general , democratic candidate, George B. McClellan. The election occurred during the civil war and was a raw time because Lincoln advocated for the Union. This election was so important because Lincoln, who supported the union, would have the power to unsuppress African Americans. His victory would change everything, but if he would've lost everything they were fighting for would have been for nothing On november 8, Lincoln won by over 400,000 popular vote. And the union won the civil war, which his death sparked the ending…
The North won the Civil War for various reasons. The North had better resources, they had 22 million people verses in the South where they only had about 15.5 million people. They also had more tracks 22 thousand miles while the South had only 9 thousand. The train was used to the Northerners advantage because they could get their supplies faster like food, ammunition, water and clean clothes. The South didn't have the industry to produce good and the ports were all blocked so other imports from other counties couldn't come in.…
The South had every opportunity to win the war. Even When they seemed doomed, England was there, ready to jump in. When the North issued the Emancipation Proclamation, all p\\hope was lost. They lost England’s support. They were stuck in a losing battle.…
The North and the South grew different way in Civil war. In the South, there were mostly farmers. There weren’t many skilled workers that why manufacturing was not much. But in the North there were a lot of manufacturing and wealthy people, they had a lot of skilled workers. During the Civil War, there were some advantages and disadvantages between South and North.…
The North took victory in the civil war against the South. The North had several of advantages when it came to defeating the other side. The blockade. As the war progressed the blockade of Southern ports slowly became more effective, closing the ports and thus cutting off the vital supplies needed to fight the war. This includes medicine. The South had to rely on Europe even more so than the North for supplies with which to fight the war so by eliminating more and more ports into which the supplies could come into the Confederacy the North slowly deprived the South of it's ability to properly fight. By the end of the war many Confederate soldiers didn't have the ammo, food, or even effective weapons required to campaign with. Attrition. The Union had more men…
The loss of the South in the Civil War was the result of various contributions. First of all, they were underequipped in artillery and production factories. The South’s population was about one fourth of the North’s excluding slaves. They were not united and lost because their own philosophical beliefs that destroyed them. Further, the South was underequipped and outclassed in everything industrially. They’re only hope of taking a military advantage was support from European countries. However, those connections were cut when the North blockaded the South and when the North incited the European public to support the North’s effort preventing European interference. Although there was a high morale to serving the Confederacy and to destroying the Union cause, they didn’t have the materials to do so. Many would just fight with stones or any primitive makeshift weapon they could use when they were depleted of bullets because of their low artillery production. The South also had much less supply lines. Their railroads were half that of the North’s and became less as the North decimated the South’s rail lines. The North figured that it would be wiser to destroy their supply lines and weaken the troops. However destroying food lines wouldn’t be a problem because the South couldn’t even supply food because as men were drafted into the army, the agricultural farms withered away due to lack of maintenance. Another disadvantage would be the size of the South. The ratio of people of South to North was about 3 to 7. However 3.5 million of those Southern people were slaves, so the actual ratio would be about 1 to 4. Considering the North’s territorial advantage over the South, it is impressive to see that the South could sustain such a defense over the four years of the war. The reason could be that the South had better trained generals such as…
In the eyes of Lincoln it was an insurrection rather than a revolt, and sought to put it down as one, which lead to early successes for the confederacy. Despite this the many advantages of the north; ranging from more citizens, to more income, caused the inevitable collapse of the south. While the south did have more officers, and skill sets more akin to warmaking; none of this would be enough to beat the union defending it's ideals. The war itself didn't strt as the union had expected.…
Why and how the North have the advantage in the Civil War? The North had an advantage over the South in many fields, including its population, industrial and agricultural capacity, and transportation network. Half of the men of military age fought for the Union in the North, around 2.1 million were supplemented by Irish, German immigrants and African Americans who most of them were ex-slaves from the South. In the South, 90 percent of the men eligible to fight and fought for the Confederacy in the South were around 900000.…
In 1862 many people truly believed that the Confederacy was winning the Civil War. The Union believed it and the other countries believed it. The Union struggled with their military leaders and they weren’t familiar with the South's land. The struggles that the North had before Gettysburg led to everyone believing that the South was going to win the Civil War.…
<br>Another reason the South well fell short of a victory was the obvious difference in population between the South and the North. The North at the time had twenty-two million men while the South had a meager nine-and-a-half million, of whom three-and-a-half million were slaves. While the slaves could be used to support the war effort through work on the plantations, in industries and as teamsters and pioneers with the army, they were not used as a combat arm in the war to any extent. This cuts the South's manpower by a third, leaving a fifteen-and-a-half million difference in the population of the two areas. Give the South fifteen-and-a-half million more possible soldiers, and the outcome would have been different.…
The American Civil War was one of the most significant and controversial periods in American history, in where Americans killed each other and still, some of the past arguments on state’s rights are still argued today. Many people in today’s world would tell you that the union won the war, but the question should be from an economic and political view. Who was the true victor of the American Civil War? Even from a political stand point with the history we know the union was still the true victor of the Civil War, because they had stronger government standing behind them, they had the money to support the war and, the industries to make the weapons and supplies to dominate the war.…
The north and south went to war mainly because of differences between the northern and southern economic interests. A big difference in economic interests was slavery. Slavery was viewed by the north and the south very differently. The growing season of the south was perfect for…
The Union outnumber the confederate by far. The confederate had a population of about 9 million and 3.5 of that was made up of slaves. The North however had a population of 21 million. This gave the North the impression that it will be a quick and easy war, but they were wrong.…
