Viking history tends to stretch over a period from the 8th century to the 11th century. Throughout this period the Vikings were known for their ruthless raids on foreign lands, most commonly recognized for the raid on Lindisfarne, where brutal Vikings boarded the island, killing monks and seizing what there was to find of worth. Not only are the Vikings know for their raids, they are also know for settlements in Britain, especially England. To this day there can be found traces leading back to the migration of the Norse people in England, especially in the English language .
Considering Viking history to be quite old, it is difficult to get hands on proof of exactly what happened and the reasons behind it, especially compared to more recent history. Though scripts do exist to tell us a story to some extent what happened. Not only were the monasteries flooded with precious metals, they also had a lot of monks to be potential slaves, or thrall, as it was called at the time in the Scandinavian lands . Though a lot of the monks were killed, some were also taken hostage. Even though the monasteries were filled with riches, some Vikings also brought farm animals and families to settle in the new lands, possibly because of the more fertile land and vast amount of space as a population increase in Scandinavia might have caused shortage of land.
Due to the Vikings being met with little resistance in their earlier periods of raiding, the raids drastically increased in size and occurrences. The Vikings gained confidence and were very well know for their fighting capabilities as well as their efficiency. This led to frequent visits to England.
