Why Diversity Is Important To Me
I live in the small town of Scottsville, KY. Everyone knows everyone here, and I like that. I like that when I am walking down the street people smile at each other, people ask how each other are doing, and how their families are doing. There is a real sense of community here, something I value a lot. I have lived here my whole life and have always felt very safe. This a great place to raise a family, and being from a small town has made me into who I am today.
We have one high school, so I am able to see kids from all over the county, which is very important to me. I loved the Governor's Scholar program because of the diversity it represented. Since we are an average size high school, it has allowed me to hold numerous leadership positions. I am a class officer and a student body officer. I am directly involved in making my school a better place. I am proud of my school and everyone who is in it. I have a lot of school pride, and so does the whole

Since our band is smaller than most, I have been able to get the one on one time to perfect my playing. I am a first chair trombone player in concert band. In marching band, I am the baritone section leader. Being in the band has taught me how to work hard, how to fail, and how to get right back up again. It has allowed me to become a great leader and understand what it means to work together for a common goal.
While most people do not see coming from a small high school as a good thing, I do. Going to a small school has allowed me to get the academic one on one time I needed. This is where my thirst for knowledge has come from. I have been taught to question everything and be an active learner. It has allowed me to thrive inside and outside of the classroom. It has allowed me to form bonds with people in the community who care whether I succeed or not. Living here has also allowed me to do incredible volunteer services for my community, that I will always

The high school has given me all types of opportunities from discipline to study options and also preparing me for college and the real world. I’s truly grateful for all the supports given to get this far because high school helped changed and mold me to become the young lady that I is today. It helped further my education and I continue to pray to the lord above that I can stay on track because only God knows where I’m headed with this education; but for sure it’s for a better me. I was awarded a wonderful education at Windham High School, but beyond the information I retained, I also learned what is important in life. At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.…

One blind spot I think I had at the start of the semester was the idea about disability. When you mention disability, I can honestly say that I always thought of the physical forms of disability. So when it came to helping accommodate for disabilities I would naturally think of things like wheelchair ramps or special seating in the offices. I never considered the fact that “invisible” disabilities were present in the workplace. Now when you say disability I think of not only the physical but also the mental and learning disabilities that can affect people within the workplace.…
