As the therapist, the first step is to ask the client what brought him to counselling. Asking this question is a way to confirm with the client if he wants a change and what he wants from the session. If my client tells me that he came to therapy because he was forced, then it is a difficult one because the client has not identified that he needs to change his behavior towards his son. If the client identifies and accepts to change, it makes therapy go smoothly. Hearing the client talk about the problem is also a way for the therapist to hear the client tell the story of the abuse in his own words, while listening and watching the client’s body language. Keeping in mind that there is violence involved and that the client was forced by authorities to make a change. I will keep in mind to ask the client what the problem is about without digging too deep into the cause of the problem.
