Why Do High School Athletes Use Steroids?
November 19, 2007

At the age of 10, I would jump off the couch and chair to be like Superman, I would spin, put my hand in the air and scream to be like Michael Jackson. Nowadays, high school students do much more to be like their idols. Many high school athletes contribute to the steroid epidemic by taking steroids to emulate the abilities of their sports idols, others take steroids to look like the Hulk and Hercules. Steroids and sports can easily be compared to Napster and music. Both, steroids and Napster, are diminishing the industries they relate to, the future results are unclear for now, but initiatives need to be made.
Steroids are illegal substances that give athletes more testosterone and extra endurance to work out longer, which allows them to develop more muscles and more athletic abilities. Athletes who take steroids risk long term health for short term benefits. Steroids cause changes in the brain and body that may result in illnesses that lead to death or mood swings. Steroids not only affect the athlete that is using them but it affects the athletes around them. The athlete on steroids will take the spotlight away from other athletes when they are being recruited from college personnel because they have more muscles or they have more athletic ability.

Steroids are vital to the future of sports because they are implemented by the younger generation of kids. It is most likely that when that generation reaches college they will still be using performance enhancing drugs. Soon they will reach up to the professionals and increase the amount of steroids that are being used in professional sports leagues. When I play volleyball and run track in high school, I often wonder if athletes on the opposing teams are abusing steroids because a lot of them do look stronger than what is

Although it is true that steroids cannot improve a hitter’s hand-eye coordination, balance, or reflex, steroids can affect how hard a hitter hits a baseball. The harder one can hit a baseball the better the chance a hitter has of a getting a base hit. More hits lead to more runs scored, home runs hit, runs batted in by a single player. High statistics lead to Major League Baseball records that have stood for many years to be broken. A player will earn a high salary because of his accomplishments. He will have more of a fan base. This not only affects his pocket book, but the pocket book of the owner of the player’s baseball team because of the increased attendance the player generates. Higher…

The usage of steroids gives the user an unfair advantage over other athletes that have worked hard to gain muscle mass without using steroids. It is easy for someone to cheat and win. With steroids, you are tricking your body. You are creating something that is not you, and that is why you are cheating. It is estimated that as many as six million Americans have used or currently use steroids. It is unbelievable that somebody could somehow live more easily and more pleasantly because of chemicals. It is fine if someone is using steroids to recover from an injury so they can get back to work and behave like an ordinary person, but God forbid they should use anymore steroids than necessary and become unusually strong. That would be morally wrong. In the same way, it is fine if people use Prozac to feel normal, and it is fine if they use Xanax to calm down before giving a speech; as long as these drugs are used only for the point of functioning as a citizen. However, as soon as the person starts using Xanax for fun it becomes morally wrong. Athletes should be regulated closely because anabolic steroids are considered cheating. The use of these drugs violates the rules of all athletics. Anabolic steroids are traced far back in…

Why else would baseball players take steroids if there was no benefit. The pluses of steroids usually come in the form of strength increase. This of course helps the player hit more homeruns and throw the ball farther. “Someone who is on steroids will experience increased performance in all athletic pursuits and will appear more physically imposing” (“Lemouse”). Every day people think that steroids just give the athlete more strength but in actuality they do more than just that. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph steroids do more to help the athlete like gain endurance to do the workout and they also help with tissue repair and recovery (Lemouse). Players Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens used steroids more for the healing factor rather than the physical gains. Mainly athletes will use steroids to become stronger and bigger to become better players though. The gains that an athlete gets from steroids are usually seen around 6 to 12 weeks, yet they can still see changes around the 3 week mark (Linnaeus). Another possible benefit to steroids is that for the athletes that use them steroids can be easy to obtain. There have been stories of baseball players going to foreign countries to play in the offseason. They were not on the hunt for steroids but they came across them because those are what the foreigners used on a daily basis. For the athletes who do take steroids this can be a positive to them. Athletes are…

Steroids come in a variety of way to be consumed: injected, swallowed, and snorted. These steroids build muscle to help one perform. Main steroids are HGH (Human Growth Hormone), anabolic steroids. All makes will make one stronger, all can end ones career. “Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone” (Wadler). That’s just a nice way of saying anabolic-androgenic steroids make one stronger using fake hormones. Anabolic steroids are the most effective and have the worst long term affects. Anabolic steroids are so effective that they are prescribed by doctors to treat “malnutrition, growth disorders, and testosterone deficiency”(Wadler) Although most of these short term affects sound good, the long term seem to throw a juicy curve-ball back at you. Anne Marie Brooks, a writer for a weekly health magazine, states: “Muscles grow so rapidly that tendon or ligament damage results during physical activity. Instead of better performance, the user may face weeks or months on crutches, in a brace, in pain. “Ouch! That sounds like the negatives over rule the positives (of steroids) and anabolic steroids don’t sound so good after all. HGH which is a safer alternative of steroids is also used by a lot of athletes. “Human Growth Hormone is produced by the…

Drugs can do a lot of bad things for an athletes body. Meyer, Stephen wrote,¨ Epo can increase the number of red blood cells to such a degree that the blood becomes too thick to flow properly, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes.¨(Meyer). Taking drugs like these can lead to death, a win is not worth more than an athlete's life. Another bad thing steroids can do is lead to Cardiovascular problems. Meyer, Stephen said in his article,¨Some studies have associates steroid use with serious cardiovascular problems, including cardiomyopathies (inflammation of the heart muscle), irregular heart rhythm, development of embolisms( blockage of an artery by a clot or particle that is carried in the bloodstream), and the heart failure.¨(Meyer). This is another health issue that can lead to death which is not worth it. People who take or sell steroids should understand that a life is at risk. People have to understand that what may seem to be a harmless enhancer can actually lead to someone's…

Long before Cal scored the touchdown in the 1982 “Big Game” against Stanford, and before Stephen Curry made a record-breaking number of three pointers in one basketball game, sports was primarily based on natural abilities. Today, sports has evolved to elevate the level of play and performance. Major competitions such as the Olympics manifest the most dominant world athletes. The winners are deemed the best in their sport for their abilities to be biologically and physically gifted and to harness that potentiality. These athletes train strenuously, often ingesting synthetic or natural additives to increase performance. To remain competitive in increasingly higher levels of play, athletes should have the choice of using their natural gifts and/or using performance enhancing drugs. Neither an athlete who has a gene that prompts a superior physique nor an athlete who uses steroids should be deemed cheaters, for they are pushing sports to a new level and creating an equal level of play.…

The United State is a country that thrives on competition. We idolize our sports stars and practically make major athletic events holidays. Children grow up with their favorite athletes plastered to the wall of their bedrooms and dream that one day they will be the next Barry Bonds, Shaqullie O 'Neal, or Tom Brady. Professional athletes train year-round to be in ideal psychical shape in order to perform their best. But what happens when their best just isn 't good enough? We expect our sports stars to be perfect, upstanding citizens and role models but this isn 't always the case. The recent exposure of athletes using steroids has exploded into a phenomenon involving athletes all around the world. It has cheapened sports and cast doubt on the integrity of our athletes. Steroid use is not exclusive to professional sports. More and more college and high school athletes are beginning to use steroids for many of the same reasons that the pros do; to enhance performance, get an edge on the competition, and improve personal appearance.…

Performance enhancing drugs in sports has become a controversial issue in the world today, especially when it comes to athletes and people involved in it. These drugs are commonly known as PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) and people who use these drugs to enhance their performance consider it legitimate as it helps in improving their concentration level. Today's athletes continue to push the boundaries of distinction in performance and physical fitness. PEDs have been a go to source for these athletes, with more refined training methods and technologies. However from a social and ethical perspective, PEDs possess harmful threats to the consumer and those who compete with them. Athletes do not take these drugs to level the playing field, they do it to gain an unfair advantage…

One of the most controversial issues with all athletes are steroids. How harmful are they? Is it worth the risk to get a competitive edge on the game? Should it be banned from sports? Steroids are not the answer; not only are there physical bad side effects, there are also psychological effects short and long term. The history of steroids dates back to the 1930s, the were taking from male testosterone originally. They were used to treat HIV-AIDS and cancer. They also helped stimulate bone growth and appetite, in order to help those who had trouble with weight gain. An example of this was a man named Barry Tyson who was suffering from HIV and took steroids in order to help build more mass in order to fight off infections from the disease. He noted that, within the first dosage he had taking at night he woke up the next day feeling like a new man and had abundant sources of energy. Some were along theses lines of using it for good medical use and healing it was lost for the benefit of athletes.…

The harms steroids can cause on the athlete are not the only concern when taking them. Steroids give athletes that boost in their performance which puts them above their competitors. This gives for an unfair advantage among the players. Since steroids work so well and create an unfair advantage, it breaks the social contract athletes agree to: “We are going to have a fair contest” (“ProCon.org”). Sports are about competition on equal footing, with respect for the opponent, and with respect for the rules of the game (“Why Steroids Have No Place in Sports”). Even if there were a safe substance for enhancing performance, if it wasn’t equally available to everyone it would still be considered cheating.…

The word “steroids” has more than one meaning, there are some steroids, which the body produces naturally as they are required through puberty and can help with stress management. Steroids can also refer to medicine taken for asthma, pain and skin problems. And then there are the steroids which are constantly being used in sport, they are synthetic drugs that are often used by professional athletes in order to increase the production of testosterone. They are available in pills, powder or injections. They are illegal in sport as they give players an unfair advantage and can cause serious health problems. There have been many claims that state that the use of performance enhancing drugs dates back to the beginning of competitive sports and…

In some instance, people have used steroids and passed away, and in other cases, people have used steroids for over 30 years with little to no effect. Since steroids have been introduced and used in sports, sports have never been the same. Steroids have improved a bodybuilder’s physique, a baseball player’s physical ability, and an Olympians overall endurance and performance. Without steroids, Arnold Schwarzenegger would have never won the Mr. Olympia Competition seven times, and Lou Ferrigno would have never been the Incredible Hulk. In baseball, Mark McGuire would have never shattered Roger Maris 1961 single-season home run record by hitting 9 more. With all that being said, steroids have enhanced player’s ability to shatter long-standing records and raise player salaries to astronomical cost. Often times, the reward of using steroids drive athletes to a higher level and make them risk everything for the sake of…
