Humans are some of the most intelligent animals on earth. All humans breathe, an essential part of living. If humans were not designed to always strive for survival, no human would be breathing. We are capable of many great things, preventing us from giving up our lives, no matter what the circumstance. Emotions benefited us in the art of survival. The way we think, feel, and interact has guided evolution through the centuries. Mentally and physically, humans were strong and became even stronger through time. Mentally being more important, the state of our minds incorporates in the art of survival.
The brain may be one of the most important tools for survival. Our emotions signal us to respond to many situations. This increases our chance of survival, the intensity due to the emotions allow us to react quicker. “Being able to think clearly is your most valuable asset in a survival situation.” (Cole).
Most people would say that those in deep depression will not strive for survival. Depression causes the human mind to enter a state of hopelessness, and could possibly lead to an attempt of taking their own lives. This may be true, but the human mind can be healed. “The attempt to insert a non-existent purpose into human life is counterproductive to mental health and happy living...”(Spohr Ch. 1.14).
Through psychotherapy or medication, the human mind is able to enter the state of a happy and healthy lifestyle. “...we all have a need to experience a life of meaning.”(Robbins). Life is something that should be cherished, the mind is built to think this way. The force of life is driven by our very own survival
