Why Do I Needtobreathe

The band NeedtoBreathe, finding initial success on Christian radio networks, was established in the early 2000’s under the foremost objective to become an infamous Christian rock band. As the years passed, they proceeded to move away from that genre with the intention of broadening their fan base. They believed that if they expressed their spirituality too deeply throughout their songs, then certain people would be estranged if they did not share the same religious beliefs with the song themes. However, in one of their earlier and more notorious songs, “Difference Maker”, the themes of religion and alienation are portrayed throughout its official music video by different uses of imagery and symbolism, direct statements, and the characters actions. “Difference Maker” may just be a normal song with a good beat to some people but in
Call into the darkness for an answer that he's never known.” Needtobreathe opens with this direct statement in “Difference Maker” by describing how even the strongest people can find themselves weak and alone, in need of help. “Yeah, isn't it amazing how God can take a broken man. Yeah, let him find a fortune, let him ruin it with his own two hands.” Needtobreathe uses these two lines to describe how God strives for you to be successful and will lead you there, but the problem comes when you prioritize yourself above Him. Similarly to the Bible story in Matthew, when Peter decides to take the leap of faith to walk on water with Jesus, as soon as his mind wanders and he begins to have doubt in his faith, he begins to drown and must be lifted out of the water by Jesus’ hand. NeedtoBreathe doesn’t directly refer to this passage in the song but it can be alluded to with previous knowledge of the subject.
