Being a financial manager will give me another option to either do in the winter or if the farming doesn’t work out. A financial manager has to work with math skills almost everyday and has to be able to work with many different types of computer applications. This job is mainly inside which I would enjoy, but I would not enjoy sitting behind a desk all the time. The office setting is very close and communication with your coworkers is very important. Knowledge of accounting skills can help improve the stability of the farm and would not require someone else having to accomplish that task. Being a crop farmer isn’t just driving tractors and combines, it involves talking to landowners about farming their land, and talking to seed and fertilizer sellers about which would best benefit their farming operation. The farm life requires hard work and dedication. Without those two things the farm would not be very successful and would not be something other farmers would appreciate. Being afraid to work your hands is something that no farmer has a problem with. While working on broken down equipment and working with the soil, becoming greasy and dusty are two things that do not affect me. Those two things are aspects that makes this particular career stick out to me even more. Very little schooling is needed to be a good farmer, that’s one thing that makes this occupation one that I enjoy. Many licenses are required to be able to handle many different types of fertilizers and to be able to operate a semi. To handle fertilizers and pesticides the state requires a specific test to be taken. It is not required to have a CDL if the farmer is only driving for farm purposes. Many farmers have a CDL so they are able to drive for other reasons besides farming. I am interested in driving during the offseason so pursuing my CDL would not be a big problem for me.
