Why Do Men Get Maternity Leave
Paternity leave is a heavily debated topic. Although not at the top of the list in today's current events, it still readily affects families across the United States. Woman have been receiving maternity leave for ages, but why haven’t men? It’s true, women play a tremendous part during pregnancy, in fact, they do nearly all the work prepartum. However, postpartum is an entirely different ball game. Men should get paternity leave from work because they can bond with their newborn, assist their spouse, and not affect their workplace. Bonding is the formation of a close relationship. It is important for certain bonds to take place in one’s life. For example, dogs are referred to as mans best friend. There is a bond formed when a human raises a puppy. The dog begins to instill trust and confidence in their human. This “bond” could result in better behavior and …show more content…
A man eligible for paternity leave can help share the previous discussed duties around the clock if he is not working. He can spend the night waking up without hesitation allowing the mom to catch up on lost sleep for a few nights. If he were working his normal hours this would prove to be quite the challenge. Though possible, it would negatively impact his work performance. Depending on his job this could affect others at the workplace. Sleep deprivation can be extremely dangerous in any environment. Let’s say a man works in a fabrication shop from 8am to 5pm (average working hours). He has a 30-minute drive, so he leaves the house by 7:30am. He then doesn't get home till roughly 6pm due to traffic. This then leaves the man only a few hours to eat dinner, shower, and most importantly see his newborn child. Assuming he’s getting the adequate amount of sleep that is. It’s safe to say most men will push this sleep pattern to a minimum because family is everything! Now a fatigued worker who has his newborn baby on his mind is behind the wheel of a forklift, see the danger

The United States provides the fewest mandated maternity leave benefits in both length of leave and amount of paid time off. According to research by economists Sara Markowitz and Pinka Chatterji and published in 2008 by the National Bureau of Economic Research, women who return to work soon after the birth of a child are more likely to get depressed than other mothers. The lack of time spent together hurts mothers ' relationships with their infants. Infancy is a time of bonding and trust. Without the mother-baby bonding time, the infant doesn’t create that bonding relationship that is needed in the child’s life. I had found that infants whose mothers had 12 weeks of maternity leave or fewer had lower cognitive test scores and higher rates of behavior problems at age four than children whose mothers had longer leaves. Longer paid maternity leaves are also linked to lower infant and child mortality. Infants need bonding time to create an attachment. An infant will not survive if he or she does not receive the love and attention from his or her caregiver.
