Why Do Processed Foods Should Have Regulations
“Processed foods should have regulations” Processed foods are ingredients mixed with chemicals that are known to cause diseases to the human body. These contain harmful ingredients that are added substances with artificial flavor and other non-organic ingredients in large amounts. Most of the primary components of these substances are made of sugars and salts, high fats and fructose, and corn syrup. Processed foods are made in less amount of time than organic food, which makes the process of making the food altered from their natural state. This type of food causes diabetes, obesity, and other diseases, therefore, it needs some type of restrictions on its consumption. Just as alcohol and cigarettes have regulations, heavily processed foods need them as well.
Non-organic foods are known to be cheap, done in a short time of period, and have a good taste. Non-organic foods are located in mostly all grocery stores, gas stations, supermarkets, fast- foods, and restaurants. Alcohol and cigarettes have restrictions on their sale because these are harmful to the human body, but processed foods harm as well. Cigarettes inform the consumers that their product is harmful to their body and can cause lung cancer. The government should regulate these millionaire companies to make inform them how it harms their bodies and provide healthier diet for consumers. Many restaurants sell supposedly healthier options by offering wheat instead of white bread or grilled instead of fried chicken. These meals are still processed and there is a slight difference in calories.     How these processed foods manage to creep into our diet can be traced back to the industrialization. Industrialization moved fruits and vegetables to the side in favor of processed meats, more sugar and more fat. Along with the industrialization came Nutrionism, or essentially reducing foods into objects with nutrients. Looking at foods for their quantity of nutrients causes the distinction between whole foods and processed foods to disappear: leading the way for when “ ‘even processed foods may be considered to be ‘healthier’ for you than whole foods if they contain the appropriate quantities of some nutrients’ “(Pollan 32). Rather than focusing on nutrients, we should be focusing on eating whole foods, and a diverse selection of whole foods at that.     In my own words I would describe ‘natural foods’ as foods that are literally by definition, natural. Not processed, no chemicals, additives, and any other elements to produce the food. The natural foods market as a whole includes “natural” products, including “sustainably developed,” “grown under fair trade,” and “green friendly, which all form the definition of ‘natural foods’. When interpreting ‘natural foods’ with the above definition, I would conclude it to be a very good business definition. The opportunity offered by natural foods is endless in terms of business. Based on a market research, there is great motivation in purchases of natural products including: 66% health/nutrition, 38% taste, 30% food safety, 26% environment, and 16% availability. For organic food producers, their acreage grew significantly due to the high demand of these organic products and to take advantage of higher margins. Natural product producers benefitted versus a convention chemical-intensive system because of the price premiums and greater profits. Manufacturers and distributers of natural products need to develop specific and distinctive pipelines in order to maintain organic integrity through the distribution chain. Organic foods are more perishable than conventional foods so they require faster and more careful handling. The competition is slight in this regard, due to the specifics of organic product distribution offering more to the distributer. Retailers are offered the opportunity to sell these natural products which provides them with something people want.
