Academic performance would skyrocket if school uniforms were implemented. School is primarily for education, however schools often becomes a fashion show. Many times students find themselves arguing with their parents about what to wear, or worrying about how a certain outfit will resonate with their peers. The National Association of Secondary School principals noted that “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork.” School should be a place of learning and understanding, uniforms highlight those principles in turn creating a productive environment. Although this is a valid concern, the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decreed that utilizing uniforms to improve discipline and boost academic performance “is in no way related to the suppression of student speech. [Students] remain free to wear what they want after school hours. Students may still express their views through other mediums during the school day.” Instead of expressing one’s views through physical appearance one may state their opinion with words, or any uniform variations permitted by the school district. If school uniforms are implemented for the right reasons, and allow students to retain a degree of self expression, then the small amount of freedom sacrificed will be worth
