The miraculous events that occur in this novel affected the protagonist's faith. One of the protagonists, Sully whose wife had passed did not believe in the phone calls were real because he had not received any. Sully is upset about the death of his wife as he believes, “The news of life is carried via telephone. A baby’s birth, a couple engaged, a tragic accident on a late-night highway— most milestones of the human journey, good or bad, are foreshadowed by the sound of ringing.”(Albom, chapter 2) . Sully is still grieving about the death when he learns of the phone calls from heaven. The death of his wife has overshadowed the phone calls, making it more difficult for him to have faith that he could communicate with his dead wife through the phone. It is stated that when a loved one dies, those who are the closest to them, often find themselves entangled in a complex web of emotions and reactions.( ).Another character that their faith was affected because of this miracle is Jack. His son passed away in a plane crash, but then afterward began to receive phone calls from him. Jack had just started to receive calls from his dead son Robbie recently and, “the shock of hearing Robbie had given way to joy, even anticipation, and each conversation made …show more content…
This is evident through the character Tess. As she is having a conversation with her mother who passed, she”smiled through tears, and even dead, she’d make sure Tess was taking her supplements”(Albom,18). Tess is filled with joy that she is able to speak to her mother. Since her mother passed in a plane crash, Tess was unable to say her last words to her mother. Therefore this is an opportunity for Tess to express her emotions towards her mother. Another character that the miracles resulted in them being content is Katherine. She has lost her friend, Diane and she is able to communicate with her now through the phone. As they are conversing through the phone, Diane says to Katherine,”We are together so you can heal….Knowing heaven...is what heals us on earth”(Albom,130). Katherine becomes content with herself as she is now able to communicate with her friend. Katherine’s life prior to the communication with her friend was not well. Since she is able to communicate with her friend, she knows that Heaven is an actual venue. This causes her to be content because she knows that her friend actually cares for her. The miracles of the phone calls have also affected the character, Jack as it has made him content. As he is having a conversation with his son that has passed:”Robbie laughed and Jack nearly broke down. The sound of his son’s laughter. It had been so long”(Albom,33).
