New laws are being written to protect transgender people, but it can take several years before those laws are passed and go into effect. With or without these laws transgender people are being discriminated against. The United States lags far behind in establishing transgender equality and a majority of all states still do not have civil rights protections for transgender Americans. Transgender people are denied being treated as equals at work and at school. The United States government has put laws into effect to protect against many other kinds of discrimination. With gay marriage being recognized in so many states of the U.S. The government should address the issue of equality for transgender Americans.
