Why Do We Sacrifice Our Right To Use Force
Jeffrey Reiman explains that democracy does not guarantee that the public officials will do what the public demands them to do; in fact power is used accordingly to the judgment of the individual who withholds the power. Dunham and Alpert make it clear that “the public has the right to spell out the criteria by which the judgments should be made, and to insist both competence and good faith in the application of those criteria” (p. 5). Dunham and Alpert define social contract as “embodying a general test of the legitimacy of the acts and rules of public agencies of law enforcement, namely, that such acts or rules must be such that the limits on citizens’ freedom that they bring must result in a net increase of that freedom all told” (p. 5).

We sacrifice our right to use force when needed which creates a protection bond between society and the law enforcement. Society protects itself of victimization from being harm but is it worth it; what makes us think that law enforcement agents aren’t going to misuse the force we grant them. It is important to keep in mind that we as society issue law enforcement agents the right to use force when need and to protect us as a society but does it decrease our probability of being harm from them. Law enforcement agents and police officers have always been seen as dominants compared to society that’s the main reason why society grants them the privilege to protect us and use force when necessary. To my opinion I believe that the police are concerned how societies view them and it also plays an important role on how police do their work. Police officers work hand in hand with the community, their only presence is required to deter crime from happening often time using them on foot patrols, bicycle patrols, and patrol cars which bring the police officers into contact with the community getting to know the people. Police officers are solely responsible to respond to public needs most of the time in maintaining the peace we need, and conducting arrests when
