Certain behaviors demonstrated by the adolescent become unregulated and uncontrolled. These youths grow up and due to their unregulated behavior, consequently corrupt the future youths of the community they live in (Why Do Youth Join Gangs?). Their behaviors become cultural norms within the community resulting in the creation of barriers that prevent social and economic opportunities. The defiant character that may manifest from gang affiliation produces a “fatalistic view of the world” providing the youth with the interpretation that everything or anything that happens around them is fate and…
In the article that we read entitled "Are the Risk and Protective Factors Similar for Gang-Involved, Pressured-to-Join, and Non-Gang-Involved Youth? A Social-Ecological Analysis” written by Gabriel J. Merrin, Jun Sung Hong, and Dorothy L. Espelage. I found that the article was a very great source of enlightenment of the world of the gang involvement. I am going to share with everyone the things in the article that got my attention. I found that it was strange that males are more than likely to become involved in gangs more so than females. Youth boys and girls are higher risks for joining or being involved with an organized group of criminals if the youth has depression, traumatic stress, anti-social behavior and suicidal ideation. In addition to…
From 33,000 gangs and 1.4 million criminally active members, gangs are spreading across the U.S. But why are gangs spreading, is it because people have broken families and are reaching out for help or is it because people are searching for power and acceptance? People who join gangs join them for the power, fame, and money.…
Three different explanations for adolescent gang members delinquent behavior: 1) Selection hypothesis – adolescents who commit more crimes join gangs. 2) Facilitation hypotheses – gang membership increases delinquent behavior. 3) Enhancement hypothesis – both the selection and facilitation work together to increase delinquency. The data suggest that for “person offences” and “Property offences” the selection and enhancement hypothesis are supported. The transient gang members support the facilitation model and stable gang members support the enhancement model. For “drug sales” and “drug use” the results were inconclusive since the highest drug sales and use occurred while in the gang but upon leaving the gang drug sales and use volume did not…
There are many theories that could be brought about with youth gangs. Lifestyle and Routine Activity are theories that could be best explained when it comes to youth gangs. Youth gangs partake in many situations where it becomes a lifestyle. Not all youth gangs are the same, so each of them would react off of something different. For example, if there is someone who wants to become part of a particular gang; they will do anything they possible can to join. Once a youth become accustomed to their way of life by being in a gang; everything starts to occur naturally. The next step that will follow after this is the routine activity. A youth can becomes involved in a gang and start to realize that there are certain things you have to do. Committing…
In the life that we live we are surrounded by a lot of violence. Whether it’s with other people, groups of people or even sometimes domestic violence is all around us. Throughout the years the emergence of gangs in Maryland has been a major source of violence. And to make matters worse the youth are starting to join these gangs at very young ages. But there is something that can be done to stop the spread of even more gang related issues.…
For example, research has been done stating that anyone can be part of a gang but nowadays children as young as elementary school are the ones being recruited. Most children join gangs so they can be a part of something and feel connected, sadly they don’t realize the main thing they are becoming a part of is violence. This example is saying that gangs no longer care about the innocence of children, they see everyone as equals and aren’t afraid to put them in harm's way. This connects to my topic sentence that says these kids are victims just like Yummy because they are exposed to the harsh environment of a gang and experience all the violence and terror that comes with it. No eight-year old should be learning how to steal or carrying a gun, yet many kids found in the US are. Another example about why kids feel the need to join a gang, is a quote from the National Crime Prevention Council talking about children and gangs saying, “ They also join when they feel unsafe; gangs offer a sense of protection to their members. Similarly, gangs will intimidate young people into joining, making them feel unsafe unless they join.” (ncpc.org) This quote is saying that most kids join a gang so they have a sense of family, and belonging. It usually comes from kids who don’t have a strong family foundation, much like Yummy who had both of his parents coming in and out of jail his whole life. This connects back to my topic sentence that kids are victims because they are the victims of neglect at home and then turn to the gangs and become a victim of those, exactly like Yummy. Yummy clearly did not have a strong family foundation and he always felt alone so he turned to crimes and gangs to find some comfort and belonging. No more kids should have to worry about their fate ending up like Yummy’s, but at this rate more and…
Yes, I do. Juvenile gangs I think are more dangerous. They are more dangerous to me because it seem like they tend to get away with things like crime. Young adult are more violence than mature adult which is why it is scary. Juvenile tend to go through with their criminal act more than adult. The reason they go through with is because they are still young minded, and they want to join the gang. Knowing juvenile gang is rising in many states including North Carolina, it is alarmingly scary to me. I am very concern, and I hope we as society can do something about the situation.…
•Guns are the most genuine patrons to savage adolescent passing; their vicinity makes a circumstance more inclined to be dangerous. There is no single profile for a rough youth. A few high schoolers with numerous danger variables don't depend on viciousness, and some brutal young people don't have any conspicuous danger components.…
There are many different reasons as to why a young person may join a gang that lives in the inner city, however for this paper, only a few will be discussed. One reason that a young person may join a gang is peer pressure from other teenagers and the need to fit in. A young person growing up in a family that has gang members in it is another reason for a young person to join a gang. “One way to know about gangs is to know gang members, to live with gang members, to see gang members on neighborhood streets” (Cadwallader 2002). If a young person is exposed to gangs then the chances are good that they will join that gang so that they fit in or to make their family members…

Culture is the feature and knowledge of a distinct people. A pattern of shared values, norms, language, traditions, symbols and their meanings that are passed from one generation to the next. Every culture has norms that establish expectations about what types of behaviors are appropriate for a particular individual in certain social situations. Deviance is an action or behavior that violates those social norms including formally-enacted rules or laws. Viewing deviance as a violation of social norms, sociologists have characterized it as any thoughts, feelings, or actions that members of a social group judge to be a violation of their values or laws (Wikipedia 2017). One kind of deviance is crime, which may be punished by the state with sanctions when a legal norm has been violated. Sanctions are…
Gangs contribute significantly to student victimization at school, including having things taken from them by force, having something stolen from them, and being physically attacked. The presence of gangs more than doubles the likelihood of violent victimization at school. Yet it is not clear that gangs are a direct cause of criminal victimization at school. Both gangs and criminal victimization in schools are products of such other factors as disorder in schools, and a host of other risk…
In America, the rise in violent crimes over the years can be attributed to Juvenile Gangs. In a March, 1996 study, DR .James Alan Fox, Dean of the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University reported that from 1985 to 1994, the rate of murder committed by teens, ages 14-17 increased 172 percent. So why do teenagers join gangs and become involved in risky behavior that can ultimately lead to incarceration, great bodily harm, or even death? What can they possibly gain from such a risky endeavor at such an early age? These questions have been raised for years by juvenile justice experts in an effort to prevent delinquency in children. It is very important to dig deep into a child’s environment to find answers to these questions.…
