The Lincoln Memorial is a ceremonious monument located in Washington, D.C., which was built in honor of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, and of "the virtues of tolerance, honesty, and constancy in the human spirit." The memorial, which was designed by Henry Bacon, was inspired by the Athenian Parthenon, and its structure was erected along the banks of River Potomac.…
The location of a monument needs to be considered when memorializing an individual because it can add emphasis to their remembrance. However, building a monument in an eerie location can distract visitors and or take interest away from the audience. For example, the Christopher Columbus Monument in Riverside Park located in Easton, Pennsylvania (Source B) correctly honors the prolific…
The United States has paid a lot of respect to the soldiers that have fought in the military. Our nation has countless cemeteries that honor our soldiers that have fought and/or died in the military. Our nation has 135 national cemeteries and 33 soldier monuments in 40 states. Although there are numberless military cemeteries, the most famous is Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery is located in Virginia and faces the nation's capital Washington, D.C. There are rows upon rows of white headstones that greatly honor the people that earned the right to rest in peace in Arlington. Arlington now is peaceful, quiet, and a place to see in remembrance of people that are buried there. Although it was not always a peaceful place,…
If money was not an issue, the question would not be where would I go, but how many places I would want to go to. Semester at Sea is a study abroad program that lets you travel to 10-12 countries a semester. To the white sandy shores of Greece, to the hallowed temples in Japan, I want to travel the world and be immersed in the many different cultures around the world. The connections made on the trip can help me branch out to different areas and perspectives of the world. The volunteer opportunities as well offered on the tour would help mold me into the well-rounded person I strive to…
Being able to go to Baltimore with RCC would mean a lot to me. This is my last semester before I graduate and then I will be in school to be a paramedic; so this will be my last opportunity to have one of these once in a lifetime experiences with my classmates. I have made several life long friendships while going on these trips and have been able to see more of the United States then I probably ever would have. From listening to Mr. Martin I have learned how to appreciate art and now I go into a museum and am excited instead of bored. I have been able to stand in places that history was made and see just how much we are not taught but how readily available it is to us if we just look. I have learned invaluable life lessons while on these…
that going on this trip will help me answer some of the questions I have about the entertainment industry as well as the questions I have regarding jobs and college courses.…
The Capitol housed many important men who contributed to founding our nation the way it is today. In May 15, 1776 men gathered there spoke out for American independence being the first colony to do so. Also men in the Governor’s Council and the House of Burgesses worked in the government building. They worked alongside famous leaders including George Washington, Peyton Randolph, Patrick Henry, George Mason, George Wythe, Richard Henry Lee, and Thomas Jefferson. These men have created our nation to become stronger than any other and Americans would not be free if they did not have the strength to stand up for…
I believe I should be selected to attend the White House Tour because with the skills I have learned and obtain through work experience and programs, it has inspired me to get into business and to learn more about my surroundings. As matter of fact, this opportunity will demonstrate to my family that I am on the right path towards success and that even though I am a first generation college student that I can persuade my brother and cousin into doing the same. Better yet, I can learn more and give back to my community or the any work force I’m in.…
I am interested in the discovery program because travelling has always been very dear to me as it allows me to be in unfamiliar situations and approach situations differently. It also alows to to expand my general understanding and reasoning where i can more accurately formed opinions on domestic and international events because I have a bigger piece of the story then just what the media portrays. for example when I was in the sixth grade my family travelled to Egypt and at first I was scared of all the guards patrolling the citie because i have never seen them being portraied as friendly, however I quickly learned how much they cared for the safety of the citzens and were always up for a quick chat. While in Egypt,we also consumed much more…
Then we saw a movie which showed us the purpose of the building and many of the daily activities. I learned there that there was a grave arranged for George Washington to be buried there but he was buried on Mount Vernon where rightfully should have been. We jumped onto the bus afterwards and arrived at the Air and Space museum to watch a movie and explore the artifacts left there. The fast plane during the Vietnam war that could dodge bullets and radar’s rays would bounce of it. During the movie we learned about space exploration unit that was going to mars and beyond. We left there to go to the FDR memorial walk through. The walkthrough was very inspirational with quotes and many symbols such as missing rocks from the wall indicating Franklin Delenor Roosevelt's life falling apart. After eating our night tours started with Jefferson's memorial. Then we visited the World War II memorial, which was composed of two sides that were labeled pacific and atlantic for the two different sides of…
Time travel is something that people rarely think about. Going back to a time in history is exciting; I would love to bounce around throughout history and see what life was really like. I am proud to be chosen by the agency to for the opportunity to visit a period in history. My mother has always says, “if you don’t know your history, you won’t know where you are going”. I did not have to think long and hard about the period I want to visit. I would like to visit is the 1960’s in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Even though this movement is not greatly discussed in the history books, it does have great significance.…
The reason I want to go on the EF Explore America Tour is because it has always been my dream to travel to Canada. The reason for my dream of traveling to Canada is because it's a remarkable place and what makes it a remarkable place is le château Frontenac in Québec city. Also, I would love to learn new things.…
“I think so,”my father replied. Today was the day we were heading to Washington, D.C. “This is my first trip,” I thought, “I hope that nothing happens to our flight”. My mom and my brother were also coming, but I wish my brother, Myles didn’t have to come. The reason we’re going to Washington, D.C. is because my sister, Lolo goes to school there.…
"You have to tell us all about your trip!" My mom said with extreme enthusiasm, and I nodded so excited to tell them about all I had learned, about the new friends I met, and told them how I was going to take them there one day. That trip affected me greatly, making me more independent and more knowledgeable on how to take care of myself. Despite my first thoughts on traveling alone, I would do it all again in a single…
Have you ever visited Washington DC? Last night, I watched a TV program about Washington. Did you see it, too. If it’s on again, be sure to see it. What an interesting city Washington is. Dr. A Rogers, the narrator, took us viewers on a tour of the White house. Did you know that the White House esn’t painted white until 1817. If I were Washington, I’d like to tour the United States Capitol at the foot of Pennsylvania Avenue. I’d also visit the Smithsonian’s two underground museums: the Arthur M Sackler Gallery of Asian Art and the National Museum of African Art. Last year, my sister visited the Holocaust Museum, but she didn’t have time to see the National Air and Space Museum because her plane left at 1:30 p.m..…
