The social wars created turmoil all over Italy and Marius, and Sulla were the great leaders of that time. Julius Caesar was excepted at the completion of his education to assume a modest office on the lower end of the long ladder of the Roman political career. however, Julius Caesar was not like other Romans. At a young age he had realized that money was the key to Roman politics as the system had by his time long been corrupt. When he was fifteen years old his father died, with him died the fatherly expectations that Julius Caesar should engage on a modest political career. Instead, Julius Caesar had set out to better himself. His first step was to marry into another but more distinguished family. Further he began building a network of connections some of which with politicians currently out of favour.…

Do people realize the amount of animals that are killed each year for merely just a small portion of their body? Whether it is hide, hoofs, or urine, it’s never enough to make it worth killing the animal, taking parts of the body and leaving the rest go to waste. Writers such as Peter Hammarstedt in “Defending Whales and Seals,” goes on to explain how he dedicated his career to saving these animals. Hammarstedt states, “I wanted Peter in this book because he illustrates very well how rewarding it is to follow your heart and have huge impact on those with no voice." This quote captured my heart and led me into the research of Premarin Mares. Horses are being hung from the ceiling by a harness, with a machine hooked to them to collect their urine. They are being given half the amount of water a horse should have, all so their urine will be more pure. These horses are called Premarin Mares. They get the name Premarin from “Pregnant mare’s urine” (HRT Drug Widely Prescribed, 2003). Premarin is a medicine created fro women going through menopause. These women have no clue how Premarin is being made. Once the mares have gone through the pregnancy and give birth, the foals are immediately on their way to death. They are either sent to a pre-slaughter house to gain weight, or they go straight to the slaughter house, because foal meat is a delicacy in some countries. Women need to be aware that Premarin should not be used because horses are being abused and killed for the creation of a medicine that has negative side affects upon human consumption.…

In How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, Foster uses literature to simplify his analysis of modernist novels. One piece of literature, he analyzes is the short story The Dead by James Joyce. In the short story, snow is a prominent element and symbolizes death and unity. It is used to highlight the death of Gabriel’s delicate ego. With impeccable wording, Joyce uses the snow to enlighten Gabriel about an important lesson--that he is an inadequate piece of the world and that he is only one of the thousands of people of the world united by snow. Joyce describes Gabriel's newfound humility as, “[h]is own identity was fading out into a grey impalpable world: the solid world itself, which these dead had one time reared and…

    3. Caesar’s response to Calphurnia’s fears adds credence to Brutus’ and Cassius’ fears about Caesar because he does not heed warnings. This response might add to the pattern Caesar might follow when other senators bring up new ideas. This can be very serious for others that want to have somewhat of a say when it comes to their opinion on a serious matter. Calpurnia notes that his “wisdom is consumed in confidence,” (2.2.49), showing that Caesar has the idea that what he thinks is what is to happen, without any other opinion.…

Our first impressions of Caliban are that of an evil monster. This is seen in act 1 scene 2 "As wicked dew as e"er my mother brush’d with raven’s feather from unwholesome fen drop on you both! A southwest blow on ye and blister you all o’er.” Shakespeare used harsh words and very poetic and aggressive writing for the character of Caliban. Prospero also feels that Caliban takes everything he has done for him for granted. He is impressed and calls them his new god. His only doing as Prospero wants because he has power over Caliban and if not for that Caliban would be the ruler of the isle. During his adolescence while these events were unfolding, it was rumoured and publicly known throughout Rome that Caligula adored his sister Drusilla, maybe a little too much. One source stated that “He caught in incest with his sister Drusilla while still in his teens.” This was not considered normal or righteous in Roman custom during Caligula’s age. However, during Tiberius’s reign as Emperor, his way of life and ruling would have influenced and changed Caligula’s view on how to rule as an Emperor. When Caligula was living with Tiberius at his Court in Capri, he was getting old and needed to find a successor and the only option was Caligula. However, the world Caligula endured at Capri, would have been nothing for which he would have seen,…

The relationship between Miranda and Caliban is extremely obvious in such an apparent Utopia, one of nature versus nurture. This isolation also allows Shakespeare to explore various trains of thought, which would now be considered racist but at the time entirely normal, through Caliban. He is a native on an island which has been taken over by someone from the West, Prospero, and the native, Caliban, is subjected to extremely harsh and unfair treatment. This is representative of the ongoing colonisation happening at the time Shakespeare was writing.…

Miss Maudie is a laid-back woman who has been around for quite a while. She understands what it can be like as a young girl growing up and learning about the world around her. This helps Scout immensely as it gives her someone to turn to. It also helps her learn things from more reliable sources than her friends. For example, when she asks about Boo Radley, Miss Maudie responds, “His name’s Arthur and he’s alive” (Lee 57), with the reasoning that, “he’s alive… because I haven’t seen him carried out yet” (Lee 57). Calpurnia is also a mother figure that Scout has in her life to go to when times get rough. Though there is no blood relation between Scout and Cal, they are very close and grow even more so as the novel progresses. She gives Scout refuge in the kitchen when the boys won’t let her join their games. Kenneth Rubin states, “Friendship promotes the development of perspective taking and moral reasoning skills” (Rubin). At this point in Scout’s life, having good role models like Cal and Miss Maudie is a great benefit to her learning and developing ideas. They are both wise women and teach Scout things in their own ways; though she may not know it now, it impacts the rest of her…

Even before we meet Caliban on the set, we are given background information on him which influences the audience to view him as some kind of hideous monster; we are told that Caliban is the Offspring of the devil and the witch Sycorax and so already we see Caliban as a representative of black magic and evil which encourages the audience to dislike him. Furthermore, Prospero refers to Caliban’s birth as something that Sycorax “did litter here” with the words, “litter” making us think of an animal being born, all of which builds up a hideous and savage image of Caliban. We also look closely at the name Caliban itself which evokes monstrous qualities as it can be anagrammatized to read, “Cannibal.” This is a term which derived from the word, “carib” which was a European term used to describe flesh eaters. In this sense Shakespeare associates Caliban with the kinds of, “savage” man eaters that Europeans would read about at the time the play was written. Although Shakespeare does not imply that Caliban is a man eater – he does lend a savage and hideous quality to his character. With Caliban’s unpleasant heritage, background, name and perceptive of Prospero Shakespeare persuades the audience set up their expectations for Caliban to…

That’s why I think Calpurnia is a better mother figure to the kids than aunt Alexandria. Calpurnia teaches them life lessons like she teaches the kids manners and how to cook she explains so they will know for the future. She also teaches them to be respectful like when she scolded scout for saying all those mean words to Walter Cunningham. Calpurnia also disciplines the children if they do wrong. Not in a hard way but its still a punishment. She doesn’t do it out of hate but out of love because she wants to do right by them because they don’t have…

Calpurnia is not mentioned a lot in this scene, only on passing but being Caesar's sister is justified to why she is in this particular scene.
