Why Does Chivalry Exist?

“It appears Chivalry still does exist,” is what an older woman said to me when I held the door open for her. Chivalry is the medieval knightly system with its religious moral and social code. It is also known as the code of honor. The word Chivalry comes from the word cheval. John Keegan, who wrote the article “The Face of the Battle”, is known to be one of the most prominent military historians alive today. He describes Agincourt as “one of the most instantly and vividly visualized of all epic passages in English history, and one of the most satisfactory to contemplate” (Keegan 199). He also goes on to say how it will interest people even who does not get excited by history. It is a very graphic story involving slaughter and cruelty. The Battle of Agincourt occurred on October 25th, 1415. It was between England and France and was a major English victory in the Hundred Years War. Again, the French outnumbered the English by a lot of soldiers, which is why the English had to be sure not to make any mistakes during the battle because they already had a huge disadvantage. Most of the French first line were dead, wounded, a prisoner, or ready to surrender. Large amounts of Frenchman were taken captive, on promise of ransom. This “presumably happened from the moment when the English sensed that the battle was going their way” (Keegan 212). The English ended up taking hundreds of prisoners, and the bodies of the French were laying piled real high. “This “building of the wall of dead” is perhaps the best known incident of the battle” (Keegan 213).
