Johnny is 12 years old and is currently learning about atoms in his science class. He recently decided to adventure outside and see if what he was learning could be put to the test. Now, it was spring and the slugs were starting to take over Johnny’s mother’s garden. Before he could go outside and play his mother asked him to go spread salt across the slugs in order to save her flowers. Johnny grabbed the salt and headed out to the garden ready to get rid of the slugs. As he walked over to the garden Johnny noticed the words sodium chloride on the side of his salt container.
1) Where has Johnny seen those words before?
Johnny has seen the words sodium chloride before in his science class.
Johnny thought back to science class and …show more content…
then remembered what he had in his pocket. He pulled out his pocket periodic table and searched for sodium chloride on the periodic table. He did not find sodium chloride. What he found was sodium and chlorine. Johnny was puzzled. His teacher had said that the items on the periodic table made up all matter, yet he couldn’t find sodium chloride. Can you help him?
2) Why couldn’t Johnny find sodium chloride on the periodic table?
Johnny couldn’t find sodium chloride on the periodic table because sodium chloride is a molecule made up of two atoms, sodium and chloride.
3) What does sodium chloride represent?
Sodium chloride represents the two atoms that when put together create a molecule NaCl
4) Explain the concept of an ionic bond.
An ionic bond happens when two or more ions bond together because of their opposite charge. They are drawn to each other like magnets because of their opposite charge.
5) Why does the compound sodium chloride come about?
It came about because Sodium is a positively charged ion, and it has one electron in its outermost shell. Chlorine, and negatively charged ion it has seven electrons in its outermost shell. So then sodium transfers its one electron to the chlorine, because for sodium to have a full shell it would need to have seven more electrons to make a complete shell.
Part II
After completing his chore, Johnny returned the salt container and headed outside when his mom asked him to go and water the garden. Johnny grabbed the hose and thought, water has to be on the periodic table. He pulled out his pocket periodic table and did not find water. Johnny was beginning to feel frustrated with the periodic table and what his teacher had told
him.
6) Why couldn’t Johnny find water on the periodic table?
Johnny couldn’t find water on the periodic table because like sodium chloride it is made up of two different atoms. Hydrogen and oxygen.
7) Write the chemical formula for one water molecule and explain what it means.
The formula for one water molecule is H2O. H2O shows that it took two hydrogen atoms to bond with one oxygen atom to make a water molecule.
8) What type of bond is represented by a water molecule? Explain how and why the bond occurs.
The bond that is represented by the water molecule is a covalent bond. A covalent bond occurs when two atoms link together through sharing electrons. This happens because atoms always want to have a full outer shell. Oxygen atom has only six electrons in its outer shell. To get a full shell, the oxygen atom links together with the two hydrogen atoms that have one electron a piece in the their outer shells then when bonded together all of the atoms have full outer shells.
