Context/Scope of the Problem (History/Background):
During World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were actually allies because the Nazis invaded Soviet Russia, which eventually got them into the war. The USSR wanted communism, and the US hates communism and wanted to put an end to it. Nothing really got done during the Cold War in terms of the UN because the United States and the USSR would continuously veto each other. One major event in the Cold War was the Bay of Pigs. In 1961 a group of 1500 Cuban exiles planned to overthrow Fidel Castro. This backfired, and Cuba was stuck with the Soviet Union. Ever since this, the United States and Cuba haven’t been on very good terms. Another important part of the Cold War was the Cuban Missile Crisis, which was a 13 day conflict that was extremely close to starting a nuclear war. The United States were scared because Cuba had missiles facing towards us. Luckily, no missiles were actually fired and World War III never happened. The cold war lasted 44 years, with countless wars in it, including the Vietnam and Korean wars. Neither countries ended up winning in 1991.
