Close to 50 million dollars were spent on advertisements in 2013 alone promoting the Blu e cigs brand electronic cigarettes. The article “Smoke signals” by Alessandra Potenza in New York Times Upfront Magazine reveals that some well-known celebrities are being used to advertise e cigs. Although e cigs are beneficial because they are a less harmful alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, today’s youth are trying e cigs and becoming addicted to them.
Marketing for today's e cig companies target youth to try electronic cigarettes, while the FDA tries to regulate them due to them containing carcinogens. Most e cigs contain nicotine and some countries like Canada, Mexico and Brazil have completely banned e cig smoking, while Australia has banned e cigs with nicotine in them.
