Did you know legend says that Golden Retriever’s descended from Russian Sheepdogs brought from a circus? You may even have one in your backyard! Read this and you will learn where Retriever’s came from, what they look like, if they are are good pets, and if they are healthy. Have you ever wondered where Golden Retriever’s came from? If you have, they came from a group of matings brought by Lord Tweedmouth from Scotland, in 1864. Lord Tweedmouth was a Liberal Politician and served as first Lord of the Admiralty from 1905 to 1908. He was also known as Sir Dudley Marjoribanks. Lord Tweedmouth named these dogs Tweed Water Spaniels. His nephew, Lord Ilchester, also breeded them. Today, Tweed Water Spaniels are extinct.

They can be cream, golden, light golden and dark golden colors. They have a thick, water-repellent double coat. Some retrievers have straight hair and some have curly hair. There is feathering on the back of their front legs, underbody, chest, back of thighs and tail. As they get older their coat becomes a lighter or a darker color, and their face and body may whiten. Have you ever wondered if Golden Retrievers are good pets? If you have, they are. They are a classic family companion. They are obedient, playful, intelligent, well-mannered, great with kids, and kind to strangers. They are great watch dogs, but lousy guard dogs. They love people way too much to be an effective guard
