It could cause serious issues in terms of politics. The people who produce and provide the fake information can abuse it by using it for political purposes. The information they created would possibly mislead public opinion in the wrong direction. It could create even more significant issues if it is related to national politics. Fake news could form dangerous conspiracy theories that are strong enough to cause diplomatic problems between countries. It could lead to severe economic problems between countries and social unrest. Despite these perils, fake news is actually being used for a specific purpose. Ling(2018) points out that the centre for Research on Globalization is suspected of spreading fake information on Google on purpose in order to incite skepticism of the West. Google just produces results through the algorithm as many other search engines do. The results from the algorithms are ranked by the user’s greatest interests. If the fake news is high on the list, it proves that many people approach the data. Ling(2018) also explains that to show results of the news, the algorithm picks out and determines the order of priority by examining the frequency of what search words are used by users. So, a result of extracting information from search engines shows a reader’s interest. Nonetheless, the reason that people are constantly interested in fake news is because fake news continues to emerge and people can easily access it through various mediums including Google and many social media outlets.
