Why I Chose Theatre
The theatre has been an important part of my life starting from a young age. Growing up, my mother was always involved with community theatre, and I would attend her rehearsals and performances. The very first live theatre performance I went to see my mom in was A Grand Night For Singing, and from the first note of the overture, I was hooked. There was something that drew me into theatre and made me want to be a part of it. As I grew older, I eventually was able to be apart of theatrical productions myself and experience the rush and excitement of live theatre. Theatre became a family affair when my father and older brother became involved in the technical side of theatre and our local stagehands union. From then on, the theatre became a second …show more content…
While my family has been supportive of my interest in theatre as a hobby, anytime I mention a possible career out of it, they say that if I do this, then I will not be able to provide for my future family, much less have one to begin with. They tell me horror stories of how their old theatre major friends are poor and unsuccessful in their lives, or how fine art positions are always the first positions to get cut in the education field. They then urge me to consider a safer career choice, and keep theatre as a hobby. Hearing the successes from professionals in the field has made me consider my options: to do what I want and enjoy, or do what is safe. While I realize that my family is correct when they say theatre takes a lot of time and hard work, they are also incorrect when they say that I would be unable to make a living and have a family if I make this my career. Yes, it may be difficult to make ends meet sometimes, I do not care if I struggle financially in my life as long as I am happy and doing what I love to …show more content…
Theatre has taught me how to interact with others, as well as how not to interact with others. It has taught me important skills like responsibility, respect, time management, critical thinking, problem solving, and how to work well with others. Theatre has also taught me to be punctual and flexible, and it has taught me to be more confident in myself and my talents. I value theatre so much because it has been a very influential part of my life, and has helped shape me into the person I am today. I want to give the experience of theatre to others. I want to inspire high school students the same way my high school theatre teacher inspired me. I want to give these students a safe place to explore themselves and develop their talents and their personality. I want to give to others connections and relationships that the theatre has given me, specifically friendships that have lasted several years and a sense of extended family. Theatre has given me so much in my life, and I, ultimately, want to give back to the institution that has made me who I am today, through the teaching of theatre to high school

Another weapon used was poison gas. Chlorine gas was first used by the Germans at the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. It was used to kill hundreds of French troops. The British also used chlorine gas. Later in the war there were developments and more deadly types were used. Mustard gas would blind and burn whatever it came in contact with. Poison gas killed an estimated one million people on all sides throughout the war.…

I am inspired by those that act because the actors are challenging themselves and playing a role that they had most likely never played before. As the audience, I am absorbed into the characters’ world and how the little mannerisms of each character complete the play as a whole. I am an absolute fanatic for theatrical performances, whether it be a play, musical, or dance. I think that performers have to express themselves effortlessly, unbeknownst to the audience. By experiencing it firsthand through pit orchestra, I was fully able to appreciate how much time was put into the preparation of of a performance. As a student at Wellesley, I will be frequenting the musicals and plays performed by the theater because the fine arts is what fuels my imagination. Also through participating in pit, I learned that many, many hours are put into creating a fantastic, emotion-wrought performance. It is not just the actors that create the atmosphere, it is also the musicians. Along with the actors and possibly the music, there are more people that put the time into making the play “perfect”, something that the audience usually does not know or does not see. For this reason, I am very excited to learn that there is a theater (aka a place to watch plays/musicals/perform as a pit member) because whether I…

The play that my group and I read and presented was Behind Closed Doors, a play with the concept of, Tragedy in your past can affect your present if you do not let go and move on. The role I played was the director, which is a role in the theater, that’s very much so unappreciated. The purpose of the presentation project was to actually understand, hands on, what it takes to produce a Theatre play, and what the jobs and elements are to do so. In theatre, communication is key. Every job works in harmony with one another, and they all need each other to put on an incredible show.…

As I was beginning a small career in the entertainment business, my mother was my source of encouragement. She inspired me to continue in the entertainment business because she knew that this was an opportunity of a life time. By the time I was eleven, I began using my voice in Spanish-language version of American films. Acting was becoming clear to me that it was my new calling and I cherished it more than singing and dancing. Then I received my first Broadway role at age thirteen where I was passing eleven and looking as if I was nine. I always looked young for my age. The Broadway drama I stared in was called Skydrift. Shortly after my appearance in the Broadway show, I was contacted by Hollywood talent scouts. The scout informed me that when the time was right he would notify me.…

I sit down in my comfy red seat at Academy of Theatre Arts in Williamsville, NY. I look around and see that the house is full. Not one seat was empty. In those seats I see people of all ages with happy, excited expressions on their faces. This got me very excited for the show that was about to be presented for me. I am very anxious for the show to start and suddenly the lights dim, the overture music begins and the curtain opens……

In sixth grade theatre became a big part of my life, without my love for reading I don’t think it would have meant so much. I’ll never forget my sixth grade theatre teacher; she opened up so many doors not only with theatre but with reading. She always said “that if you don’t know what you are reading how are you going to make it mean something on stage?” You can take that in various ways, it is what you make it. Theatre isn’t as simple as just reading from a script, most people think that it is. Before we would even start on a play, we would do a read through and would have to know the script like the back of our hand in a sense. From doing research on the author of the play to the smallest things on the list.…

I was apart of Spanish Club and was the secretary of this club in 2007. We had fund raisers, put on a show for the International Festival two years in a row, held at Bloomfield High School, and also provided semi formals ,many accomplishments were made being apart of the Spanish Club. I was also joined Stage Crew my junior year, it gave me insight as to how plays and shows are put together. It’s not an easy job; it is time consuming but a learning experience. Next time I watch a play, I know how much hard work everyone backstage put in, being a part of stage setup and lighting was something new I tried out and did…

In that light, it also teaches me how to not abuse the power that is given to me. As assistant director, I am given the ability to kick students out of the show, cancel rehearsals for personal reasons, and pick favorites when students get out of hand. However, this does not constitute me to misuse the powers however I see fit. My job is to help everyone, so everything that I do as assistant director should be completely selfless. This experience also teaches me how to handle being a part of something bigger than myself. In school, the object of learning is for you to know the information and for you to apply the information to get high grades. In this job, my direction affects the reputation of the entire theatre department at my high-school. Everything that I do affects my director, the cast, all the other directors and stage managers, and then finally myself. Putting myself last for certain projects, like I do as assistant director, will allow me to be successful both independently and…

From singing Phantom of the Opera in the shower to pretending to be Mimi Marquez swinging from the wooden bars and ladder of my bunk bed belting melodies from my favorite show, Rent. My mother implanted theatre into my heart since the beginning. But I was always missing just one aspect of the magic I knew, performing. I yearned to hear the patter of my feet on the stage, for my voice to echo throughout a theater during a rehearsal, to transform into a different person and tell their story. But when I was younger I guess it just wasn't my time yet. My family didn’t really have the money to enroll me in any sort of performing arts program and our town lacked a theatre program in schools until high school. Performing in the comforts of my own bedroom would have to do until I got to high school. Once I got to high school I eagerly auditioned for the 2 shows they produced a year, desperate to finally be on a stage. Yet, there was something missing from the experience, I wasn’t aware of it at the time and it wasn’t until my friend Kevin pulled me aside during one of our rehearsals and informed me about the pre professional theatre company he was apart of. Soon enough I convinced my mother to sign me up for theatre camp at Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts. Essentially it’s where I found myself as a performer and as a person. Before the program I hadn’t ever taken risks or made choices on stage as a character and as myself in life. If I was ever in a place with the opportunity to meet new people I wouldn’t take advantage of it, usually I’d wait until people came up to talk to me because I just couldn’t bring myself to talk to people. My confidence was at an all time low before Gaslamp, I didn't believe that I could accomplish anything. However, spending 8 hours a day for a month with a group of accepting, loving, intellectual, inspiring people changed me and I learned so much about myself that I…

During the past eleven years I have directed thirteen school theatrical productions. The skills used in working with the high school students on stage are directly linked with the same skills I test for in class. The actors need to be able to: read fluently, use appropriate expression, volume, phrasing, intonation, smoothness, pace and comprehension to make their character come to life for the audience. Even though they are no longer in my classroom, I am still coaching them on the exact same skills!…

I had to decide what high school I want to go to.
