Why I Chose To Become A World Class Engineering Student
For the past semester I have been listening to professor haddock tell me, along with other students, how to become a world class engineering student. World class engineering students set goals in their academics. They want to graduate with a 3.6 GPA or higher and within four years. From the very beginning they will have a certain degree of engineering set in their mind and stick to it no matter how hard it gets. Currently I have 3.5 GPA before finals, but sadly I am behind in math courses so most of my engineering core classes have been pushed back one semester. To reach the level of a world class engineer I will need to get my grades up and do well on my finals to end this semester strong and continue to keep my grades up in the up and coming …show more content…
They have a detailed plan of their academic road map. As a freshman I was required to meet with my academic advisor and plan out my next two semesters and a summer semester so that I would know exactly what is needed to be a successful student from semester to semester. Currently I have a detailed academic road map for the next two years. I need to complete two more years of the roadmap to have a complete roadmap of my college career. Personally, I believe a world class student would have an internship or job in their field of study by the end of their sophomore year to help expand their network and knowledge of engineering. I have been searching for jobs and internships for the up and coming summer. I am trying to learn my field of study academically but also, through a hands-on approach. To be considered a world class student I will need to find an internship within the next year.
Inevitable adversity is unavoidable. No person has ever been able to go through life without hitting something they struggled with. Any successful person or student, no matter the degree, needs to understand that not every subject, field of study, or situation will be easy. They must push through and deal with the trail. I have had a rough few years when it comes

I lost my brother right after Christmas my JR year of high school. A month before I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Within six days of my brothers passing my inflammatory markers took a turn for the worse. I was hospitalized for three weeks and could barely get out of bed. While all of this was happening, I was the head captain of the wrestling team for my high school. Three days after my brothers passing and being extremely sick I wrestled in a tournament. I went 5-0 and choose to wrestle up a weight class so my team could blank a team 76-0. After I was released from the hospital I was behind academically and faced weeks of makeup work for multiple teachers. Surprisingly, I ended that year with a 3.7 GPA. I came back the next year and graduated with a 3.9 GPA and placed 4th in states. I still battle doctors, my disease, and academics at the same time but I push through. My brother had a saying that has stuck with me since I was a kid. It was, life will go on. It just might suck for a bit. embrace the suck! It happens, but hopefully everything works out for the best. I believe I still have a great deal of things to learn when it comes to facing inevitable adversity, but I also know life isn’t always bad, it will get better and its worth waiting out the

The Engineering Science Success Academy (ESSA) is a seven-week summer bridge program hosted by the Diversity Program Office in the college of engineering in conjunction with the College of Natural Science and Lyman Briggs. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” You are not guaranteed to be successful so you must work hard to succeed. If you happen to fall along the way, get back up and try again; failure won’t kill you, it will only make you stronger. What counts the most is that you continue to do your absolute best even though there may be obstacles in your way. This can be seen in each of articles I read as well as in my own experience. Each person in the articles, and myself have had some sort of obstacle to overcome when it came to our education but we never gave up until we were where we wanted or needed to be. If we want to be successful and get a good education we must have determination, encouragement, and fulfillment.…

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. When in fact I set myself up for one of the biggest challenges of my life so far, by signing up for multiple online college classes, helping out with activities all over the school, and playing football for the first time since freshman year. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential,…

I still remember the day like it was yesterday, when I got the news about my mom being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Back then when I was in the seventh grade, there was not really much to know about it but that when someone had cancer they would die. My mom being the closest person to me and her being the only parent that was by my side, thinking that she no longer would be. When this time came there was nothing else for me to do but step into my mother's shoes of becoming the most responsible one in the house. This was the most difficult obstacle that has ever come my way due to the fact that I was only 12 or 13 around the time and I had to take care of a newborn baby while my mom was away getting treatment. She was gone for two…

Despite these challenges, I am on the path to recovery, taking it one day at a time. I have recently started therapy, which has helped me process the trauma of managing my illness, among other things. While I recognize that my GPA and demographics may not meet traditional expectations, I am confident that these factors do not define my potential. If given the opportunity, I am committed to using it as a platform for growth and excellence. I believe that my experiences have equipped me with a unique perspective and resilience that will enable me to thrive in a college environment.…

A common theme throughout my high school career has been overcoming adversity, even when it did not seem possible to myself or others. During my freshman year, I developed an illness that caused me to miss school occasionally. Life was different before my mom was diagnosed with a terminal cancer. I lived in a house with my mom and my two siblings. My parents were divorced and my dad was not a big influence in my life. We all wanted to hold onto the hope that she would defy the odds, but we had to be realistic. She knew my dad could not support three kids financially; she had no choice but to find a better option.
