Why I Failing In My Spanish Class
However, although getting a job improved my life for the better, it also caused more issue. I started failing my Spanish class. Since I had to ride the Marta bus home, I wasn’t getting home until late. This caused me to struggle to get my homework done for my Spanish classes. It was crazy. I managed to keep A’s and B’s in all of my academic classes, but Spanish was a disaster. One day, after working until close at my job the previous night, and not getting home until eleven o’clock that night, I was given a pop quiz in my Spanish class. I knew I was going to fail because I could never manage to understand anything in her class, I and I didn’t study the previous night. Once again, I started crying. Therefore, the instructor asked me to step …show more content…
Therefore, I told her that I would try to get up an hour early every morning to study and get any work done I had not completed the night before. After talking to Ms. Jose, not much changed except my brother ended up finishing school in December, and I was now riding the bus to school. Well, not until my mother got word that her only daughter was riding the bus to school. She was infuriated, and my mother was not afraid to let my father know. After my mother found out what was going on, she moved me to my grandparents’ house in Lithonia during the week. I was excited because I had my own room and I did not have to smell my brother’s disgusting farts anymore. My mother never found out about my Spanish grade, so I got to keep my job. Nonetheless, could ride the bus to school and get a little help in Spanish. I only passed her class with a D, but I was excited to be done with her class. As time progress, I finished my school year, my brother graduated, and I became a senior in high school. I was so thankful that even though I chose Lithonia over my mother that she still loved me enough to make sure I was

These events include two divorces, five house relocations, and a transfer to a new high school during senior year. I consistently failed assignments and could not stay focused during class as my . Most teenagers would have given up here as the disappointment from both their parents and teachers would have destroyed their hopes for a successful future. However, this anguish became a catalyst for what would become a significant restructuring in both my demeanor towards schoolwork and my perspective on the future. The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have. I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the…

When my parents first met at a dance club, they never imagined changing diapers in a family bathroom a year later. My parent’s honeymoon stage in their relationship was cut short on April 13, 1991. I learned the information of my birth and mothers work history through questioning and interviewing her about employment and family experiences as well as her mothers. My mother was 23 when she had me in Sanger, California; I was their first child, born from an unplanned pregnancy and out of wedlock. Although abortion and contraception were legally attainable, these resources were economically and culturally inaccessible to my parents before my birth. My mother came to the United States when she was sixteen and worked in the fields as quickly as she could to repay her sister for traveling expenses. Her goal was to make enough money to start a better a lifestyle than the one she left back in Mexico. She stated that she did not plan on having a family until she had enough means to support herself and have a home of her own. During her interview she mentioned, “No queria hijos todavia, pero te tuve a ti a un buen tiempo,” meaning that she did not want children as early as she did, but she had to accept the outcome of her actions. My mother did not have the privilege of having an education due to her economical constraints. Therefore, my mother’s job came first and family a few years after due to the hardships of settling into a new country and culture.…

After all that vigorous work. It’s as if I was trapped in a nightmare and finally opening my eyes again to just see a bright sun in the sky. It is amazing to me to see how much I have accomplished since second grade. I feel as if the little girl who walked throughout the halls of Spanish Immersion, the girl who had little faith in herself to succeed, had changed into a mature, hard working young lady. In second grade I was partly depressed. I had felt as if life had no meaning. I struggled in school, and did not appreciate what was being taught. My mom suggested that I may have had dyslexia, but we were not certain that was the reason. It turns out, she was correct.…

“Everything will change…” was practically the only thing I could think of being a 13 year old girl with a firm friendship with her 16 year old sister. The summer of 2006 was when I discovered my mother was packing up her things and moving to Athens to work on her PhD in Psychology at the University of Georgia, while my 3 brothers, younger sister and I would be living at home with my dad. It did not bother me much at all when I found out my mom was moving for a temporary time to further her education, considering my parents are still married and she would only be living up there for two years. We would also get to visit her on the weekend, and she would also visit us on the weekends. Plus my mom and I do not get along well, so I figured I needed a break from her. On the other hand, I did care she was taking my big sister Amanda with her.…

I underestimated the time investment in handling a full-time course load and working forty-hour a week. I spent too much time on the job that I could not keep up a good performance in school. I came to classes with tiredness and exhaustion every night. I kept making excuses for staying in my comfort zone even I clearly acknowledged my grades was going down. The peak moment occurred when I got C+ in my advanced Math class and an F in my Computer Science class.…

In the early years of my childhood my mother had been only in the states for only couple of years. Consequently, when my mother was entering the United States she had lost one of her shins, and for a short time was disable until, she finally got help from a friend who contacted her doctor and donated a prosthetic leg. Even through trouble times my mother never let nothing get to her, so right away she got up and found her first job at a local restaurant that didn't require any social security or to speak the english language, yet in effect it didn't pay so well. Thereupon, our lives wasn't like an average Joe. Our home was a size of shoe box only four walls, one large bed, a sink, toilet, and a small gas stove all in one room, yet my mother never shed light how small our home was but how bless we are so we all stayed faithful. When it was time for school my mother couldn't always afford us to buy us new clothes, so we went shopping at the flea market or garage sales. As the school year ended families were heading to summer vacation and going out of town. Unfortunately since our financial standing we never had the chance to pleasure summer vacation. However, I didn't mind not having an average summer vacation, because my version of summer was staying back with my mother listening…

It was very stressful translating for my mom. My mom is very strict about education. To have to tell her I wasn’t doing well in one of my classes while translating and having her give me that motherly look at the same time was hard. I was playing two roles at same time—a student who is also her son and a translator who is not the professional getting paid to provide this service. Later, after the meeting, my mom would bring up my grades and say, “You’re the one who told me this.” I was frustrated the translator was getting paid for just sitting there while I did all the work and got in trouble with my mom.…

walked into the first class that I have ever took and confronted chaos. The four students in my Spanish class were engaged in a heated spitball battle. Before meeting Mrs. Nguyen for the first time, my final year in middle school was a major decay compared to my previous years. I was struggling emotionally and mentally, feeling like at times I was going to burst into tears and constantly calling myself a failure. My grades suffered tremendously as well, barely passing with D’s and C’s and saying my parents were disappointed was an understatement. 8th grade was definitely one of my worst time periods in my life. I met Mrs. Nguyen for the first time when she came over to my middle school to talk about high school…

    My Immigration Experience

My academics as a student was mediocre, & lot of it had to do with the fact that when I witnessed my sister not been able to use her scholarship, I got discouraged and I idiotically told myself, why I should I try to get good grades when there is no reward for an immigrant? This became the narrative during my final years of high school, and I spent most of my time being foolishly wasted by playing video games and hanging out with my friends. When my graduation came, I ended up graduating in 2005 with a 2.3 GPA, and as low as it was, all I cared about is that I finally got over with school. Then reality hits me like a freight train, after one month of doing nothing after graduation, some of my friends that were U.S. citizens were bound to attend college and others had attained jobs. I couldn’t bare the fact that I was going to be left behind, so I traced my sister’s steps and began my journey into the adulthood, though the only difference between my sister and I, was that she knew what career she wanted and I didn’t. My first job, came with the assistance of my sister, she helped me get a job in a retail store selling men’s clothing, working at minimum wage. After working there for a year, I knew that it was time for me get a raise, so I took the initiative and requested my boss if he can provide me a raise, his response: I’m sorry but I can’t give you any raises because of your status. In my head I told myself, is this how I’m to be living my life working at a low-end job, and getting paid minimum wage? As negative as that though was, I was not going to let the immigrant circumstances dictate my life, so I immediately began…

The first being that I had to give up the other activities that I was participating at the time. Quitting basketball and karate was upsetting, but we thought that dance would be a better opportunity because I had natural rhythm and enjoyed dancing on my own at home. In addition, I was at the dance studio five days a week for two to four hours at a time. Some nights I would eat my dinner at the studio, in-between classes. I was sad that I could not enjoy dinner with my family. I had to find time for homework as well and sometimes had to miss friend’s birthday parties, which was upsetting to me, especially at that age. Conversely, I had more confidence in myself by being given the opportunity to dance competitively. I was proud of myself for taking this chance to be on the team. I worked my hardest in rehearsals and practices to be prepared for competition. Mrs.Karen helped guide me through the dance classes. My mom’s excitement did not change, she was proud of me. It was a marvelous…
