Out of the near 300 hours of volunteering I have accumulated, the time I spent at The Ottawa Hospital has transformed me in the most positive way. Some afternoons I held small concerts and played Bach and Gaubert for them. Volunteering motivated me to give as much as I can because even the smallest action would elicit the happiest reaction.
I also worked at Emergency, so I could be like those doctors who influenced my life and help patients with more critical need. On certain days there was not a moment to rest; on others, I had the time to chat with the seniors were alone. I was able to provide comfort to those who needed it and make an otherwise unbearable process more comforting. I met a lot of fantastic people, but *Mary was the most memorable. After her examination, she asked me to accompany her to Tims Hortons. She bought seven iced cappuccinos in total. Living alone, she is limited in mobility so she freezes her favourite drink for later.
To me, Mary is unforgettable because of her positive attitude and unbreakable love of life despite the challenges she faces. She also taught me the most important lesson of all, that there are unlimited ways where I can help people and unconventional places where I can find people in
