Why I Want To Be A First Generation College Student
Research became an integral part of my life over the course of one summer when I took part in the McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievemnet Program. This program lasted approximately two months but that short amount of time drastically changed everything I had planned for my future. After the program, I changed my undergraduate major, I altered the extracirriculars I was involved in, and my career goals shifted drastically from the plan I had in place. As a first generation college student, my perspective of possible career options was limited an did not include continued academic pursuits. Through the McNair program, my eyes were opened to a new realm of opportunities. For the longest time I had a simple understanding of what "research" truly …show more content…
I would like to pursue graduate education so that I can not only obtain the skills necessary to conduct higher level research but also, because study at a university like NC State will connect to the individuals who will provide me this quality education and who will open avenues previously closed to me. Despite my investment in my research projects, several statistics courses, and various experiences in presenting my research I am fully aware that I do not possess the full gambit of skills necessary, nor am I as proficient in the skills that I do have, in order to conduct higher level research. I had the chance to visit NC State this past fall and learn more about the program from faculty, staff, and graduate students in the Psychology department. The practical approach of various aspects of the program from the dissertation process to the focus of research projects quickly made the program my number one choice. I believe that my personal learning style would be served best by the NC State program and that I would emerge as a well-trained …show more content…
I have had the chance to serve as a tutor, a peer advisor, and as a teaching assistant for a variety of courses while I was an undergraduate and in my current role as an AmeriCorps VISTA. Through these positions, I had to chance to lead class periods and I have found that I enjoy teaching at the university level, as compared to the times that I have helped with elementary and middle school classes. I fully enjoy seeing students finally understand a concept they have had trouble with and connecting students with their passion. Watching them take that spark and ignite it into something much larger than themselves has been one of the most rewarding

Being a first generation college student is something that I take great pride in being. The panelists from yesterday radiated pride and responsibility, in upholding their name as a first generation college student. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them, however, it was hard for me to identify with some of their feelings and attitudes about attending a four-year university. It felt odd for me, as many of my classmates could empathize with how the panelists felt, whereas I, coming from a different background, had trouble pulling from my experiences to understand their previous circumstances.…

Entering my first year of college in the fall of 2016 was very stressful, but I believed I found a home for myself for the next four years at Rosemont College. While applying to colleges my senior year of high school, I always thought that I would work better in a smaller environment. I believed that if there was a lower facility to student ratio, I would exceed my full potential. When I arrived at college, I started to notice that my views about school had changed. I no longer wanted a small school and I realized that at a small school, there are very little options for classes. Currently, I feel as though I still have a high school schedule and that the opportunity to plan my classes how I would like is nonexistent. I would also like to be closer to home; I believe I need more support from my family. Also, I am looking for a school with an active residential-life presence, so if a problem were to arise, those who work within the position would be quickly alerted.…

The motivation of first generation college students can be broken into multiple categories. As a new first generation college student I can confirm that a student’s motivation can change over time when going to college. In the article “First Generation College Students: Motivation, Integration, and Academic Achievement summary” written by Moises Prospero and Shetal Vohra-Gupta (2007), they explain that students who attend college to receive a higher paycheck tend to have a lower grade point average. Many low income students are driven to drop…

Another reason I wish to join Teach For America is because I miss the classroom. As an Education minor in college, I have over 100 hours of in-field experience teaching in the classroom. Since my first field experience in a fifth grade classroom, I have longed to see my own students’ smiles when they understand a concept for the first time or to help them when they become frustrated with a problem they do not think they will be able to solve. During one of my student-teaching experiences, I helped students create their own stories, and seeing the fun that they had creating their own worlds made me realize that teaching was something that I wanted to do in the coming years after.…

First-generation students are the first in their families attend a post-secondary institution. They are more likely to face many challenges in university life and how they experience their higher education. “Within the institution, first-generation students may have lower levels of academic and social integration” (Billson and Terry, 1982), and have, as Terenzini and associates (1996) point out, “less positive out-of-class experiences than traditional students”. In fact, many research studies have found that first-generation students lack engagement in academic and social capacities, as for example, they don’t show their engagement in the learning and social experiences such as joining events, participating in classes, using support services,…
