Nurse practitioners have many responsibilities; they need to make sure that the patients feel comfortable and safe while being cared for. “This is where the nurse practitioner needs to know how to listen and comfort the patients” (Shmoop.com). If …show more content…
I were to become a nurse practitioner I would have to work on my communication skills. Finding a job for a nurse practitioner is nothing to worry about, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts by 2022, 33.7 percent, opening up 37,100 new positions” (U.S.News & World Report). I also want to be a nurse because I want to be able to know for sure I can get a job anywhere I go.
I plan on becoming a registered nurse for a while and then I will go back to school to get my NP degree. “All nurse practitioners must first be registered nurses and have a bachelor’s degree in nursing” (U.S.News & World Report). I may even want to stop and just have a career as a RN, or I may want to further my career after I get my NP degree. There is a wide range of what I can do with this occupation. Durant High School offers Health Science I and Health Science II as electives. I’m currently taking Health Science I as an elective this year and Mrs. Lively does a splendid job at preparing her students for any health career they want to pursue. Although, I do not plan on taking Health Science II next semester because I am going to enroll in Health Careers Certification at KTC.
There are many schools that have a high ranking in this occupation but, “the top three schools for nurse practitioners include, University of Pennsylvania, University of California, and University of Washington” (U.S.News & World Report). Unfortunately, I have not thought about attending these schools. I have plans on attending Collin County in McKinney, Texas as it also has a good program for this career. University of California would be in consideration just because I would love to live in California. “To get going as a nurse practitioner, you have to get your NP degree which takes 2 to 4 years” (U.S.News & World Report). Not to mention as I did before, you have to get certified as an RN which takes 4 years with you NP degree on top of that; I’ll have to attend 6 to 8 years of college. “The average salary of a nurse practitioner is $65,470” (Shmoop.com). That is not bad at all; I will most likely be in debt for the first years of my life considering I’ll have to pay for my college. “More employers offer flexible work schedules, childcare, educational benefits, and bonuses” (Bureau Of Labor Statistics). Having flexible work hours is wonderful and I greatly appreciate that more than I should right now. “The work schedule ranges from 8 to 12 hours, 5 days a week” (Shmoop.com). If I have a family, they will be affected but not as much as I expected. My family will only be affected if I have to work on holidays, night shifts, or weekends. There aren’t many health hazards in this occupation.
Although, there are some that may end up being serious; “They spend a lot of time walking, bending, stretching, and bending which may lead to back injuries because they may have to lift patients, and if they may be in close contact with a patient with a disease” (Bureau Of Labor Statistics). As long as I follow the strict guidelines, I should be fine and not have to worry about the hazardous parts of this job. I have not yet figured out what field I want to work in; I’ve pondered on working in a clinic or a hospital. I still have time to think about it. There are many important qualities that nurse practitioners need. “They should be caring and sympathetic, emotionally stable, and organized” (Bureau Of Labor Statistics). I’m emotionally stable and organized; I’ll have to work on being sympathetic. I believe a major satisfaction in this occupation is being able to care for people and having the feeling that someone feels safe in your hands. I love knowing when someone trusts me and I can take care of
them. Now that I know more about this career, I know this is the career I want to pursue. I have my mind set on this career and I plan on doing everything to be successful in it. This career is perfect for me and I am more than excited to become a nurse practitioner. Although, I will have to go through 6 to 8 years of college, it will be well worth it. I am positive I will love this career and I am glad I extended my knowledge about nurse practitioners.
