Why I Want To Be A Probation Officer

Warden Genovese, As a probation officer, I would ensure that the offenders assigned to me knew that I was approachable and trustworthy. I would earn their trust through my actions and not my words. As with anything in life, I would treat every offender with dignity and respect because even though they have legal troubles, they are still human beings. I would want to get to know them so that I know their background other than what their criminal record tell me. I would also ensure that every offender that is assigned to me knows their specific probation or parole conditions so that there is not any confusion as to what is expected of them. I would not be the type of officer that would look to violate an offender for the smallest infraction. The whole point of probation or parole is to “rehabilitate offenders and guide them back into society while minimizing the likelihood that they will commit a new offense” (Justia, n.d.). I would take it personally if one of my offenders ends up going back to jail or prison because I feel that it would be my responsibility to keep them on the straight and narrow. What makes me different from other officers who just do the bare minimum every day would be that I actually care and believe in the criminal justice system. I would want to make a positive impact on the offenders that are assigned to me and lead by example. I would also be caring and compassionate for those that are on probation or parole because this is the profession that I chose. I do not know many probation or parole officers, but the ones that I do know are true professionals who are heavily invested in their offenders.
