Thus, as my endeavour to acquire a full and balanced appreciation of the challenges of medicine, I ventured out and now possess a mixed bag of experiences. My week in different departments at KPJ Hospital have given me an essence of the realities of medicine. Routine ward rounds with the team of experienced doctors were the most enticing aspects of the experiences, where I had seen the trust that patients placed in doctors, and was profoundly awed by the persistence and respect with which all the staff reacted to this moral obligation. I was able to witness the job diversify of a doctor ranging from prescribing medication to performing surgery as well as delivering effective care during difficult times with empathy, patience and compassion to enhance the doctor-patient relationship all for the better outcome of the patient. I was humbled by the courage and the clarity with which patients discussed their illnesses. I have been fortunate enough to attend training courses on first aid to improve my abilities in emergency treatment, which I have officially used to make a difference in the path at work and out in the community, solidifying my desire to specialize in emergency medicine. Hence, transforming my fascination in medicine’s scientific base into passion. My year long participation has permitted me to gain a more extensive view of the world and add to a genuine desire to help the less fortunate. I have taken the effort to participate in several local charity events. However, after realizing that donating money is simply insufficient, I have decided that I need to personally promote change in the world.
